Default Fifth wheel - how big for SRW F350?

Looks like I'm gonna be buying a fifth wheel toy hauler for all my weekend excursions. What does everyone recommend for the maximum length for towing behind a midly lifted single rear wheel F350, comfortably?

With a single rear wheel and 5th wheel, you will find that the pin weight over the rear axle will be the limiting factor of what you can tow. Pin weight will often be around 20% of the weight of the trailer.

My 30' Patio Hauler lists 1900 pounds pin weight empty. It's probably closer to 2000 when loaded, so when you add the weight of the hitch assembly and people in the truck, it puts me close to my pickup's gross vehicle weight rating, and close to my rear axle weight rating- even though I'm below my gross combined weight rating...

Anyway, the same length of trailer from different brands can vary in pin weight greatly depending on how it's built (slide outs add a lot of weight), but you would probably be within your truck's limits in the 30 to 33' range.

I have an '07 F350 CC. Bone stock. I will be leveling the front and putting airbags on.
I've got plenty of power.
I've got the Raptor 3814. It's the fifth wheel with a 14' garage.
It's 39' 7" overall.

I don't have any problems towing it at all. When I hook up, it only drops the rear end about 3"
When I'm fully loaded, I'm pretty close to the GVWR and GAWR in the rear, but still good.

Good Luck

Is your F350 a dually or a single rear wheel truck?

Quad4fun,

When you posted that, I looked up the ratings...

Raptor lists the hitch weight (empty) at 2760. Ford (if I read it correctly) lists 4,000 pounds of payload capacity in the F350 SRW CC (which is way higher than Dodge's SRW ratings).

Anyhow, if you figured pin weight is closer to 3,000 when fully loaded with quads, propane and water, you would still have 1,000 for passengers and hitch assembly... So buy the published numbers anyway I would guess you would be just fine.

Out of curiosity, would you post your numbers from the scale? It would be interesting to see how acutal weights loaded for the real world compare to advertised weights...

Yep, I'll do that for you.
I've got them written down in my book, just not sure where I put it ggrrrrr.
I don't think my Raptor is that heavy dry though.

I can't tell by looking at the '07 brochure, but the '07 hitch weight is way heavier than the '06.
My '06 hitch weight shows 2480 and the '07 shows as 2760 ?????????
All the '07's look heavier............

Not sure what's up with that........

I'll let you know though, I've got a scale down the road and I'll go weigh it again next week when I get back from California. Will be the first long trip towing it. Well besides to Winchester Bay and Back.

I looked at a Heartland Cyclone, model 3920, today. It has an empty rating of 12,505lbs and a hitch weight of 2999lbs. I even had the opportunity of mocking it up to my truck. It looked perfect. the nose is even designed for short box trucks. So no sliding hitch needed. Anyone think it might be too much trailer for my single rear wheel F350(11,400lb GVWR, 4100lb payload rating, 15,500lbs 5th-wheel rating)? Anyone hear anything, good or bad, about Heartland's or Cyclone's?

Well, I think you truck would do it, but I bet if you had the chance to test drive a trailer that big behind a SRW and a Dually, you would opt for a dually. The extra width just makes things more stable and planted.

I don't know much about the Cyclone, but irv2 has a pretty active toy hauler forum and I bet you would get good information there...
