What tires work well with PSD?
#1
Sorry if this has been covered a million times, but I'm on a Govt. computer and don't have lots of time to dig up the old threads.
I have a 2001 7.3 PSD Crew Cab 4WD. It's getting near the time to replace the tires and I need some input from those with experience. It currently has 265/75/16 on it and I am looking to go to a 285 if it can be done with no mods. Need something that works well both on pavement and the occasional trip to Glamis and Dumont. Don't really take it deep into the sand but if I were to venture out I need something to keep me afloat.
Prefer something kind of quiet on the hiway, will get many miles if maintained properly, not too harsh on the mileage if I go bigger than the 265, and can handle the weight of a 28' TH with a couple of DS650's in it.
The truck is stock with no major mods, just shocks, and plan to keep it that way for longevity purposes.
If you have the inside on where to get some of the recommended tires at a reasonable cost please include that info. My local dealer wants $1K for the Goodyear Silent Guards in the 285. One of only two local dealers so I'm at their mercy here. Ebay has some decent deals for sets of four but when you factor in S&H... I'd like to stay under $600 if at all possible, is it? I can mount and balance on our base for under $20 so I don't mind having them shipped if the total cost if right.
Thanks for you help guys.

Ace, I have a truck just like yours but lifted. I had a set of Goodyear Silent Guard and was not happy with the miles I got out of them, only around 30,000 and that was with them being rotated. They were also marginal in the sand at Pismo. I am now running BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A and am happy with them. They are quiet on the road and from the way the tread looks, I should get around 45,000 miles out of them. They also perform good in the sand when I lower the pressure to 20 lbs (-/+) when towing my 5th wheel. When I am out and about at the dunes, normally I can inflate the tires to 40 lbs and run on and off the beach with out any problems. I have a lift on my PSD and am running 33's so I can't help you on sizes, but mine are D rated tires. Hopes this helps.

RD, my pops is essentially running 33s as well with no lift. They only rub a bit in the front at full lock.

On 16 inch wheels, right? I am running 17's and at first they hit the front air dam which was trimmed back. Now they rub the fender well about 5 inches in (the area where a mud flap would go) Only rubs on a hard turn and the suspension gets compressed So far I have lived with it for about 18 months and no metal damage

Nope. 17s, but they're offset a bit. So that tends to help.
I need to take some pics sometime just to show what kind of rub we get from them just for reference.

Thanks for the replies so far. Mine are 16's. I've searched everywhere, don't know why the tire shops are so much damn more expensive than WalMart. I may try and hit up Sam's Club in the next few days. looks like I'm down to the Wrangler, the BFG's, or the Uniroyals.
What about Nitto's? Seems like decent prices but from what I've heard/read they don't tend to last long.

I was going to get a set of Nitto's, however I got a great deal on the wheel/tire package I have right now, so I can't give you my experience with them, sorry. I think with Wal Mart's buying power they can sell them a lot less than tire shops. Have you tried Costco? I know they sell the BFG's.

Alrught, I got tired of messing with Sam's and Costco messing around with their claims about putting on 285's when the OEM is 265. Went ahead and got the Uniroyal Liberator AT, same thing that was on it when I bought it. Now my question is PSI. Usually run 70psi but am fairly new to the trailering deal. Should I leave it there when towing 13,000lbs? I want to get the most life possible out of these but still tow safe and comfortably.
Thanks again for all of your input.

You could leave it at 70 PSI but your ride will be really stiff. I would leave it there for towing your trailer but drop the PSI a little bit for every day driving, that way the side ways will flex more and take some of the harshness out of out crappy roads. I drive my truck with 40 PSI in them and then put 50 PSI (Max. PSI for towing) when I tow my trailer. Good Luck
