My friend had a starter go bad on his older 600 grizzly and started it by hand for a month before getting it fixed. It was no fun but was certainly manageable.By the way the original rope is still holding. The pistons in a single throw crank twin do go up and down together but they don't compress and fire at the same time.As far as weight is concerned lighter machines do sink less in muskeg and mud.

Does anyone know about the Arctic Cat 500 TRV. It's set up for two riders with a seat, backrest and floorboard for a rider. Looks like it would be perfect for either two up or hauling some bulky material (elk) while riding alone.

WyoWilderness-
I was thru your neck of the woods a few years ago, and I'm jealous! That's some great country to look at and live in! Probably gets pretty rough in the winters, but dang me if I wouldn't trade places with you!
I straddle a 2000 Arctic Cat Auto, and have treated it badly. The problems I've had are directly traceable to the operator. I've used it like a small tractor to pull and tow some big and/or stubborn loads, joy ride on trails wherever, and for serious work hauling tools around my acreages. It starts easily in the winter, although we don't see temps as low as you'll have. 'Cats are tough, so check'em out!
There are a number of machines that could do the job you want, so may I throw another idea at you? See who you're closest GOOD dealer is and check out his product lines. I decided that I didn't want to spend a day hauling my Quad around if it needed work, and found a good dealer with an outstanding mechanic locally. I've saved a bunch of money and time with that combination. Just a thought...

Wyowilderness,
You will get a lot of opinions on this forum. I will share mine with you.
I am 59 years old and searched for 18 months before purchasing the Kodiak 450. My needs were very similiar to yours. The Kodiak 450 is great on gas and the 4 wheel L/S and the locker are GREAT! The 450 is stone reliable and very low maintenance. I personally like this size and weight of the Kodiak and the bike handles well and is very nimble. I have been in snow, mud, and water and am really happy with this wheeler. I don't htink you can go wrong with the Kodiak.
Good Luck.

I live in So. California but would love to ride in your area some day.
Let us know what you get.
