Default 1St Service ??

The dealer I just bought my Kodiak 400 from told me after the break in period (100mi or 20hrs) i have to bring the atv back for its 1st service (AT $250.00) That seems kinda steep!!! I am a diesel mechanic for the National Guard so I'm thinking to do it myself. It can't be that hard! I saw the service manuals on E-Bay for about $20.00. Any advice on doing this myself or should I just bite the bullet and have the dealer do it? I mean you can buy quite a few ad ons for it at that price. Even buying all the filters and fluids from the dealer to do it myself I can't see spending more than $60.00 or so. I also heard you have to regap the valves Ohhhh. can't be that hard esp. with the manual. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

With the manual, you should be able to do all of the servicing with your mechanical experience. The manual will tell you to remove the front rack and plastic. I got away with only removing the gas tank. Make sure you got a torque wrench and metric fealer gauges. You can get the valve tappet tool, but I did without. Is Westfield near Springfield? Spent a lot tof time there last year during the begining of Iraqi Freedom.

Purchase a Yamaha factory manual. Buy any gaskets or filters recommended for the first service from your dealer. Keep the receipts. I have a folder that I keep all my receipts in and write down the mileage and hours every time I change the oil or anything else. If I ever have a problem, they will know it is not from a lack of maintenance.

You might as well learn how to adjust them yourself. It MIGHT need to be done every once in a while.

I think the dealerships like to strike while the iron is hot to get as much money out of you as possible. Maybe you could find a local atv garage (not related to any certain brand) and have them check the valves.

my brother has adjusted the valves on his twolf, it was very simple. a service manual is a good idea, it will tell you all that you need to know.

That dealer is truly trying to rape you. I have never been charged more than $160 by any dealer on any quad or bike I have ever owned.

I do take mine back for the very first service, but not after that. I feel it is worth the green to keep my warranty intact with no questions being asked. I would check with other Yami dealers to see what they charge. You may be pleasantly surprised. There is a KawaSuki dealer locally that charges $230 for first
service, but one 25 miles away that charges $140.

Make sure you keep all records as Specta says, it will be important should a warranty claim be made.
Without receipts and dates logged, they can refuse to honor any warranty, not just on the engine,
but any.

Thanks again for the recomendations I will call around to see if anyone has a better price if not I will just do it myself. I'm goingto buy the service manual now I think E-bay had them for under $20 seems pretty reasonable. Took the kodiak out yesterday to some dirt roads by my dads house had fun, getting used to how it handles. Got it up to a little over 40mph on dirt and snow, felt like I was flying. Can't wait for the weather to warm up some it was only 10F out. Have a good one and safe riding

The stealership here charges $180 for just a valve adjustment, that's why I do it myself.
