My brother has a gravel driveway, and what he did is buy two dolly swivel wheels and mounted them on the plow instead of the skid plates. He adjusted it so that the blade is 1/2" off of the gravel. And he plows like that. The only time he hits gravel is if the center raises higher then the tire track areas. But that's not often.
