Default locking winch question

WTH is a locking mechanism? Is this opposed to "free spool"? If so, Yeah, my 2.5 "locks". Locking would be engaged to the gears. Engaged, it pulls, and lock when one lets off of the switch. Free-spool, one can pull the cable/Syn. rope, to the anchor point, without the motor. Hope this helps........

Default locking winch question

The warn 2.5ci has a dynamic brake only and if you are pulling the atv up a hill or out of deep mud the winch will not hold it in place when you turn it off. It will slowly let the cable creep out. They sell a mechanical brake for it for 80 bucks that will hold it in place or you can order the 2.5ce winch and it comes with the brake and is only 20 bucks more than the 2.5ci. I was going to order the 2.5ce and the dealer talked me into the 2.5ci and said he would get me the brake for 20 bucks if I need it. I am going to get the brake because when I was stuck in deep mud I would stop the winch to let it rest and the atv would slowly creep back into the mud. Get the mechanical brake either way.

Thunder- You ARE the winch expert! Do you, by chance, work for a winch manufacturer?
No ****, I AM learning from your input, and am taking as many notes as I am being impressed!

Default locking winch question

No I am no expert nor do I work for a winch company, However I did some research on them and then trial and error. I am not sure exactly how the dynamic brake works I just know that it is there mainly to stop the winch roller as soon as you let off the button and the mechanical winch brake actually locks the drum so it will hold the load. It does it automatically and is supposed to be very easy to install if you already have the 2.5ci. My suggestion is if you haven't alresdy purchased a winch and are looking for a warn order the one with the brake. Both the 2.5ce and 3.oce come with the mechanical brake and it is about 60 bucks cheaper to order the winch with it. Ramsey also makes the winches with or without mechanical brakes.

Default locking winch question

Checked my winch. 2.5 w/ brake. I never really paid attention to it before. I thought that a winch was SUPPOSED to stop when one let(s) off of the switch. I'm still keeping the "Interupter" that I installed under the seat to keep my kids from fugging with it.........
