Shift on the fly
#1
Does anyone with a Grizzly or Kodiak shift into or out of 4-wheele drive while moving. My opinion is that it isn't a good idea even though i do it and have not hap any problems. Does anybody know for sure if it will do any damage.

I don't know about other quads, but the Griz has electric shift for 4x4 and is very smooth. I don't shift it with any kind of load on it, just rolling and it has never made any noise or acted like it has had problems going into gear. I also make sure the wheels are straight. The reason I'm asking, is because even when your stoped and shift from 4 to 2 wheele drive, a lot of times you have to start rolling before it actually shifts so what is the differance.

The reason the owners manual says to not shift on the fly, is to cover their butt. If you were wildly spinning the rears, and went into 4x4, its possible( but not likely), the front could engage and , suddenly get a good bite of traction, and send you off into the trees. Youve probably noticed, if you have a load on the drivetrain( either power on or compression braking), it wont go into 4x4 until the load comes off.
You got the right idea. If the tires are all going about the same rpm ( straight ahead...no spinning), then theres not going to be any damage. Same goes for coming out of 4x4. Youll notice, if you turn it off, and youre still on the gas(pulling), then it'll wait until the load comes off before it goes back to 2x4.

I shift mine all the time when it is moving and have never had a problem or heard any noise.
