Default To much oil?

If you overfill you oil then run the engine, can it do damage to the engine? Someone mentioned something to me about this and I want to get the facts straight.

I think this depends on how much you overfill it. If you're talking a couple ounces I don't think you have to worry. But if you fill it to the rim, then you've got problems. I'm not exactly sure what will happen but I'm sure the added pressure of too much oil can cause serious stuff.

Not much help, I know, but it's all I got on this issue. I'm sure someone else will be able to fill us in.

Depends on the machine. The newer "dry sump" engines are really sensitive about overfilling. The pressure from returning oil has nowhere to go if you overfill, and you strart blowing seals.

I wouldn't think the old Yamaha 350 engine would be particularly sensitive.

If its just a couple of ounces, its not a biggie.
The upper mark on the dipstick, is roughly where the crank wieghts are at, The theory, is, if the crank weights start hitting the oil, itll whip up the oil, and add air to it. Itll behave like cool whip. And because air can be compressed, but liquids cannot be compressed, theres the problem. Oil pressure will drop( because the air in it is being compressed), and volume of oil ( once its all frothy), drops. So the motor lacks both oil pressure and volume. Neither is good.

I just asked the same question in the Polaris section. My new 500 HO came from the dealer about a 1/4 inch over the full line on the dip stick. The feed back I received was it was no big deal because that was not that much oil and Polaris calls for 2 qts and that will put it a little over the full line. I didn't have any foaming as stated above. Mine has less then 20 miles on it, I should have checked it when I bought it but I didn't. To be on the safe side I drained a little out so it was at the full line. I really didn't have to drain that much, only a few ounces.

I also have an Polaris ... MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE POLARIS OIL CHECKING PROCEDURE! It's a dry sump system ... i already have seen someone drain some oil out of their Polaris 500HO and when i checked it correctly it was 1/2 a quart low.

Recon ranger,

I was not worried directly about my machine. It was more of a curiousity issue. Why do you think that the yamaha 350 would be more sensitive than another engine?
