Hondamatic engine/transmission oil
#1
I just bought a 2005 Honda Rancher AT 400. When I do my post break-in period oil change; i'm wondering if anyone knows if Honda makes a synthetic 10W40 oil, and if I'm headed in the right direction in wanting to use it? If Honda doesn't make a synthetic, would my warranty be void if I used a different brand name synthetic oil? Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

The specifications for permissible oil is in the Owner's Manual. Be sure to NOT use oil with the "Energy Saving" friction reducing additives as they are not good for the Honda drive clutches.
My dealer specifically told me that Mobil 1 was the only synthetic oil that they recommended. They also said that it was the only oil Ok for mixing with Honda oil in that my machine was delivered to me a quart low! &^$%!&@^%
After the first couple of oil changes, I would switch to Mobil 1 and never look back.

Honda sells a synth blend, HP4. In my opinion, a blend is the way to go. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.......the superior lubricity of dino oil, and the durability/heats stability of a synth. I run this in my 400's (and HP4M with moly in the 450R).
One note, Honda does not list HP4 as one of the oils it recommends for its bikes with an autoclutch (Rancher, Recon, 250EX, etc....). I presume that it is to slippery for an autoclutch (????). You are lubing not just your engine, but also that hydromechanical transmission. Before using anything, be sure your owners manual lists it as a recommended oil!
