Queen Victoria said, "I take a bath once a week whether I need it or not". How many guys would like it if say their wife, only took a bath once a week? Especially back in Victoria's day, before deoderant, shampoo, tampons.......you get the picture. Well, you sound like the "Queen Victoria" of oil changes to me!

I don't consider twice a year oil changes adequate at all, but I doubt most people even change it that often (precisely why I never buy a used vehicle!). That is HARDLY OVERKILL, given you high riding mileage. With that long interval, you BETTER BE RUNNING A SYNTHETIC!

I prefer an ester synthetic (Maxima Extra or Ultra, or Motul 5100) to the PAO synthetics (Mobil 1 or Amsoil), but the PAO's are centainly far better than any dino oil. http://www.maximausa.com/technical/l...beNews2002.pdf Here is overkill: Between oil (and oil filter!) changes, my 450R goes 5 hrs. absolute maximum. 400's get a change every ~10 hrs. My utilities and kids bikes go longer at ~20 hrs. Especially running an ester synthetic, I could certainly go much much longer, but that wouldn't be overkill, would it.

So if you are riding your 450 all day long, you stop in the middle of the day and change your oil and then again at the end of the day? Jeez man, you are going through more oil than gas!

My manual says to change it every 6 months. Problem with that is that it doesn't take into account how much someone rides during that 6 months. I ride a couple of times per month and now at the end of 6 months the oil still looks like new. I'll change it anyway even if it's "overkill."

On a big weekend camping trip, I would only ride the 450R on the fast wide open desert rides. For playing around or trail riding, I would be on one of the 400's. So, in a weekend I would only put on a maximum of 5 hours on the 450R..........but at that speed, that would be 300 miles of high rpm riding!

I put less than a thousand miles a year on mine. change before winter and then in spring time. So thats about every 500 miles.
And at 6 quarts plus filter every time, I dont want to do it more than that!!!!!!!

Frankly, I think if you're changing your oil before it looks like tar, you're fine...
