GNCC Utility Stock Class?
#1
I was doing some looking at the GNCC site and was reading about what qualifys for the Utility Stock Class. Below is the rule as it reads off of the GNCC site:
11. What can I change on my ATV and still run the stock class?
Riders may change tires, wheels, throttle assembly, axle, handlebars, grips, skid plates, plastics and seat covers, including those that add traction, but may not change seat height. May not add larger fuel tanks or quick-fill fuel systems. Riders may change front shocks on ATVs that do not come with rebuildable stock front shocks, but they may not replace the front shocks on ATVs that do come with rebuildable units stock (like the YFZ450). Only machines that come equipped with front reservoirs stock may run them. May not add front shock reservoirs, or modify or remove front shock reservoirs from machines that come equipped with them. Riders may add bead locks, nerf bars, foot peg extensions, and open or closed end, metal or plastic hand guards. May not add steering stabilizers or air filter sleeves. All motor components and rear suspension must remain stock. Aftermarket replacement parts may be used so long as they do not improve motor performance, add travel to the suspension, or have a reservoir. Example: must have stock pipe, silencer (with stock exhaust baffle in place), carburetor, air box, air cleaner, rear shocks, etc....
Now what Im confused about is Mike Penlands and others clearly have aftermarket exhausts installed , isnt this in violation of the rules? Or are they only looking for major engine mods?

Hes listed under the Utility Stock Class and thats the class he has always run under. Im not trying to point fingers Im just trying to find out what really is allowed and whats not. Its pretty apparent by all the aftermarket exhausts out there that this is one thing that they dont really monitor.

I have done some auto crossing and when they say stock, there are very few changes that can be made. Penland does ride Stock Utility class.
Bigdiesel, you are asking a question that I would like to understand as well. I was going to try to race on the 22nd, but I will be on a cruise and don't return in time. This info will be good to know for next year. Also since Penland is going to be riding the Outlander 800, I will be able to get a good idea of what works.
The Faast Flexx Bars look like they would be a great addition to any big utility quad. Will be definitely checking into those...

Yea, Id like to get GE4x4 in on this he races this class so he will know. I know I have seen Penlands Kaw with aftermarket exhaust but i dont know about the Outty 800. Another question I have is can you change the Clutch springs? And how do they know if someone has?

My bad, he does race in the stock class. Do you have any pics of him racing with an aftermarket exhaust? The only pic I found through the GNCC site wasn't clear enough, but it did look like a nondescript stock exhaust to me. According to the rules, he can only use stock exhaust. Sure doesn't stop him from hooking up with exhaust sponsors though

Im not saying that he runs a after market exhaust in that class but it was an article about his GNCC wins and it showed him riding one of his KAWs that had an HMF exhaust pipe, I just assumed it was the same bike he used in the GNCCs. The rule doesnt state you cant use aftermarket parts it just says that they must have stock specs, maybe thats it.
I cant find the article or the picture now. The utility class doesnt get much press ya know..........LOL

The aftermarket parts cannot increase performance, so you would not be able to go to a stiffer clutch spring. What surprises me is you can't change the cheesy piece of crap stock air filter.
Some how I think this is one of those rules that is hardley ever enforced. Do they ever make someone tear a motor apart to see if it has been bored out or has stiffer clutch springs?

I raced the stock utility class at Unidilla and talked to Mike a lot. His 800 is stock other than the flex bars, tires and rims. The clutch springs can be changed but it is not necessary even Scott Kilby who runs utility modified runs his 800 stock with the exception of a HMF pipe and same mods as Mike. My 800 was totally stock

Mdog is right........And the reasoning behind seeing the quads Penland has with the aftermarket pipes and such is, he races alot more than just GNCC. He also does the Baja, and some of those 12hour endurance races.
