The old Foremans were never meant to be a high speed flyer. If high speed desert riding is your thing then sell the Foreman while it is still valuable and get a more appropriate sport quad. Any faster and the stiff suspension would need an upgrade and then you have a bottomless money pit.

I'm 62 and dont need a high flyer, but 40mph still does not cut it.

On flat hardpack, 52 is about it, so it sounds about right on sand. Theres probably alot of tire to sand slippage, and you might try sand tires, to get better traction.
It seems on my 450, the horsepower runs out, long before it hits the rev limiter, in 5th gear. I believe a stock 450 motor is about 16 horse, and pushing all that weight and heavy tires and wheels, its doing all it can.
Oldturtle is right, the foreman was designed to be more utility than sport, and just wasnt designed to fast riding on sand. Your best bet might be to sell, and get something that fits your needs better.
