you dont want to use the winch cable as a tow strap. the brake inside the winch isn't made for that. i got stuck and had a guy pull me because i was pulling him in do that with his brand new winch and he broke it. some winches however do have an optional dynamic brake that will allow this situation to happen without damage. if you arent sure about your particular winch, i wouldnt try it. definitely anchor down and use the winch properly if at all possible.
