Default Mishaps on the trails

Soon, I will be going to Harlan county KY for some trail riding. After thinking of what to bring along, I thought it might be a good idea to bring a spare oil filter. Has anyone ever gotten a stick or other sharp object through their oil filter while out on the trail? That would suck if it ever happened. I'm curious to know if that happens often or not.

Anyone?

Never heard of that happening before. But if you had to take of the filter to put a new one on, you better bring enough oil to fill the entire crankcase also. Most of the time, the filters are pretty well protected, and the odds of getting a stick to point the exact position to puncture the cylinder shaped oil filter is next to impossible. Sometimes if you have to drive a screwdriver with a hammer through a filter to loosen it, the screwdriver slips off the filter, and that is TRYING to puncture it! So i wouldnt worry about that happening

well if you got skid plates i wouldnt worry about that too much and they are made tough so that if they do get hit they wont crack or get a stick threw them. Bring one if you want but i wouldnt worry about it.

Thanks for the input. I know it is a farcry from ever happening but I've seen some weird things on the trails. I've seen a guy catch a 10" file in his tire before to the point where only the very edge of it was sticking out. The only reason we knew it was in there was because the file kept clanking on the inside of the tire on the rim. It caught the tire at just the right angle.

I'm not too worried about the filter but you never know.

When are ya heading down to harlan. What trails do you guys hit. I saw some off park trails there that looked pretty cool but didnt hit but i talked to the ridge runners pres and he said that they were really rough trails. You should hit them and tell me how they are. Talk at ya later

Off-park trails are all over the place down there. If we're not on a tight schedule, we tackle some of the red trails in the park. Otherwise, it's mostly blue. POWHITEBOY down there is the one who usually guides us on the off-park trails. I'll ask him when i see him about the trails you describe.
