Help me decide if I should buy
#1
Hi,
I'm really stuck on this one. It's a 2001 Suzuki Quadrunner 500 4x4. It has new itp 589's and some kind of winch. Has 2200 very hard miles on it. The plastic is all cracked etc. It's going for 700.
Here's the issues. The engine is dissassmbled and in a box. He said there were metal shavings in the oil and the u-joint for the front wheel drive was stripped and something inside the engine (I think a mointing point in the case or something) is broken and needs welding. It looks a little beat. He replaced the stripped joint and it stripped again and has a new one not installed.
Anyone have this issue? I have some mechanical ability. This guy has more than me and he's dumping it.
Thanks in advance

If I was you I would get on the phone and call some Suzuki Dealers and tell them the same thing you typed in this forum, they may have the exact model they took on a trade in maybe with a good engine and a trashed frame and for a price you can build one good one from 2 bad ones, or have them price a new engine for it, maybe someone has the engine you need collecting dust on their shelf and maybe they could be desperate to sell it, and you may be surprized a new engine may be less expensive than you think, im thinking you could get a new engine for around $1800 to $2000. The Dealers do keep the older and junked ATV's. There is another one around you just have to work hard finding it.

I would skip that one. Metal shavings in the oil can get expensive fast. If a motor mount was broken, that may be why the universal stripped out. If something fell down into the bottom end when it broke there is no telling how much damage was done. At the end of the day you have a motor that is trashed, maybe the tranny too. Even if you repair or replace the motor, the frame probably isn't much better. I would spend more to get something that at least runs at time of purchase. You could always offer him a couple hundred for it though, I doubt he will ever see 7.
