I have a warn 2500 and its been used and abused for over 3 years with no probs. It's not sealed so once a year I take it apart and clean it out and regrease it. As far as grease goes warn recommends aeroshell 17 grease and thats what I use. I looked up aeroshell 17 on shells website and its a severe duty synthetic jet aircraft landing gear grease good from -100 degrees to +300 degrees, sounds good enough to me and you can get it for $6 a tube.

Yes, you have to take the side cover off, and pack grease around the inside

I just want to say thanks for this thread. I posted on another site about getting a winch and they weren't much help. From what I have read here I am now more confident in getting a venom wench.

Can someone tell me how to change the grease? Does it have to be taken apart? Can you leave it on the atv or do you have to take it off? Where could I get better grease?

If I may introduce a friendly tip; NEVER use your winch as a tie down while transporting your atv. It causes a lot of stress on the bale.

What is the bale? I have used my winch as a tie down before. Should I quit doing that?

To change the grease, you need to remove the winch, and take the side cover off by removing the long bolts. Pack grease around the cylinder, and when packed, wipe of the contacts.

After you put the winch back on, it will sound like it wants to freeze up for a second or two, but that is normal until the contacts dry off, and only takes a few seconds of operation.

I would use Amsoil synthetic marine grade grease. You can get it from a bumper to bumper, or oreily, or anvanced auto parts sore. Or you can order it from www.amsoil.com
