Well for starters....The two stroke engine will mix gas and oil together and burn in the cylinder...The four-stroke is like your car/truck the oil changed and remains in the motor/pan. Two strokes have more zap or punch (they may smell a bit ) smoke a little .... newer ones alot less though. This should help a little some one else can jump in now with the tech. terms for you. Caper....

A 2 stroke does not have valves. Smaller and lighter. It is a piston port motor unlike a 4 stroke has valves with cams, intake and exhaust. 4 strokes are much heavier. A 2 stoke is much easier to rebuild, has much more power and is more responsive. A 4 stroke is expensive to rebuild and it takes almost 2 times the cc's from a 4 stroke to get the same power out of a 2 stroke at half the cc's. 2 stroke is less maintenance but in some cases will need to be rebuilt while the 4 stroke is more maintenance but may never need to be rebuilt. 4 stokes require oil changes and valve adjustments. 2 strokes in most cases just need rings to freshin it up and its just gas/oil mix and go.

2 strokes are being fazed out because of emissions standards and 4 strokes are alot better now days. I guess depending on what you are going to use the quad will determine what you want in a 2 stroke or 4 stroke. Like wille said go to that web site and you will learn a whole lot of stuff.

when it comes to 4 stroke or 2 stroke, 4 stroke has power and torque right there. 2 strokes u have to wait till u hit the power ban.... and u dont have to rebuild them as much as................. real men ride four strokes... jake..

I think the other main difference in a 2-stroke the majority of the oil mixed with the fuel is not burnt during combustion so that the cylinder has lubrication.

A 4-stroke has an oil resivour and an oil pump like a car to lubricate things so no oil is needed inthe comustion chamber. SO it burns cleaner.

Now a days, (power aside) cleaner is better. As the unburned oil in a 2-stroke is exhausted into the air/water.

As to which type is better? Depends upon how you will be using it? If I was looking for an engine to do a bunch of towing and low speed grunt work with I would have so say 4-stoke. If I was looking for an engine for quick throttle response for short bursts of speed for playing around I would say a 2-stroke.

So I not think you can answer which is better until you add...Doing what?
