What air tool to remove stubborn phillips-head screw?

These are the ones with a 30 or 40 degree taper that cannot be replaced with a allen head....

 

Youll want an ACR phillips bit. The ACR is for anti cam out, and youll notice the flanks of the drive have gripping ribs, to prevent the bit from climbing out, under load.

An impact driver works well.

 

Yes, I've used an impact driver to remove phillips head screws from dirt bike side covers where the screw head had very little (if any) of the phillips grooves remaining...

 

As posted earlier an impact driver works well if the material the screw is in will stand the hammer blow(s).

Taper head screws with torque or allen heads are available from specialty screw and bolt suppliers. Cost is not that much more than regular fasteners. Some sizes are available with anti-sieze coatings which should not be used in high vibration applications as they will tend to back out.

Look in your yellow pages under "fasteners" and "bolts".

You can also cut a slot in the screw with a hack saw and then use a striaght blade screw driver. If that doesnt work i some times use a center punch on the outside of the screw and try to turn it out that way.

 

Instead of a hack saw I have used my dremel tool to cut a slot inthe head and used a regular screw driver to remove it. Only draw back is if it is really stuck then this makes the head heasier to twist off.

Soak that sucker in a spray lubricant/penetrating oil like liquid wrench for a few days before you give it a try and it helps a bunch.

Soak the screw with rust penetrant like good old PB Blaster. If you cant get an impact driver cut the slot in the head and some heat works wonders. Heat arond the screw but not on the screw then use a screw in the slot that you cut. This works for me almost all the time at work.

 

I have a Yamaha Big Wheel. I had a oil filter cover that had a screw that was stripped. I used a slam hammer to get it out. I dont know if the impact driver and the slam hammer are the same.

Basically you take this device, looks like a screwdriver, 'load' the device, put it on the screw head and hit it with a hammer, the force loosens up the screw. Works like a charm.
