I like to go as close to the battery as possible, and be careful with the positive cable to the battery since it is hot all the time and not fused. Actually I like to use some split-loom on that cable for extra protection.
Other than that the contactor needs to be protected from rocks and high heat, and out of the mud as best as possible (but they seem to be pretty water proof).
On the Foreman I went on the outside of the rear storage trunk, since that's where Warn suggested. It gets mud slung on it from the rear tire there, but has worked perfectly. On the Rincon I went on the back of the airbox. The muffler is behind the airbox, but there's clearance, and I couldn't find a place that seemed any better. It's also been fine.
