Default Riding on the road to get to the trails,

In Montana ATVs are street legal. I ride right from my garage to the trail head. Could technically drive my brute to work if i so desired.

LOVE MONTANA!!!

Default Riding on the road to get to the trails,

So at these places where it is okay to ride on the road, do you have to have your ATVs registered? Here in NC, no registration or anything, but can't ride on the roads.

Default Riding on the road to get to the trails,

Here in Ga the law doesn't allow ATV's to ride over paved road's or even over dirt road's in the county since the early 90's , when a state law passed that stopped issuing tag's for ATV's !

Before this law went into effect you could get a tag making it legal to ride over the access road's leading to riding area's on state and federal reserve's , but a few bad ATV'ers got this stopped by car's , truck's , and RV owner's starting to complain about near misse's ; with these few rider's who were began reporting these complaint's to the Federal USFS Office's and the State DNR Game Warden's !

This new law put a stop to riding over these access road's for everyone , the county tax and tag agent's all tried to get this law repealed ; stating all the tax commissiner's were losing thousand's of tax dollar's by stopping the sell of these tag's !

But the Fed's refused to overturn this law , the USFS and the DNR started building parking lot's with ramp's for unloading and loading atv's , motor bike's at the trailhead's so people didn't hve to ride over the main access road's anymore ; this would've been ideal but for the fact you had to drive and tow your trailor's over 2 mile's of dirt road's to get to the riding area's i rode the most !

During the Blizzard of 93' ATV owner's were allowed and even encouraged to ride over all state , county and city road's to help people who where starnded at home and over the road's ; giving Aid to anyone who were in need !

Even after power and water was restored and truck's and front wheel drive auto's were able to get around on the main highway , the state county and city law enforsement let atv's use the road's unless Atv'ers weren't pulling out or across the road's causing near miss accident's !

While riding with a freind , we were crossing a county road when a sheriff's deputy almost hit my freind when he crossed in front of his patrol car ; i stopped to see if my freind who stopped to talk to this Deputy !

The Deputy told my freind to be more carefull , and that law enforsement were still allowing ATV's on the road's as long as they didn't get complaint's from the plubic , he looked at the tag on my 1986 Honda TRX350 Foreman 4x4 and told my friend i was legal ; because i had a tag on my Foreman !

By State Law i could still get a tag for the Honda Foreman after the new law went into effect , because my Honda was titled as a motorcycle instead od an ATV ; my 1986 Honda TRX350 Foreman 4x4 was still legal to ride over county road's !

This model atv was the first and last quad titled as a motorcycle , every other brand and model's were titled as an All Terrain Vehicle's ; and were required a special untility tag before the law stopped issuing these tag's !......

Default Riding on the road to get to the trails,

Yes you had to register your quad and have a special utility tag , and even with the utility tag you were only allowed to ride the main access road's that lead to the trail heads ; these road's were all dirt road's and on the Cohutta Management area and game reserve and wilderness area !

This law only required that one quad had to be registerted with a tag , and one rider in a group had the have a tag with a adult rider 18 yrs old or older with a valid drivers license ; but this was before the State Law was passed and in effect !

The tag's back then were only a utility tag , like the one's you get for your pull trailer's ; my 86' Honda TRX350 Foreman 4x4 was titled as a motorcycle and had to be registered and a motorcycle tag issued !

I don't know why this 86' Foreman was titled as a motorcycle , an old family freind had the same year make and model as mine ; but but his Foreman was titled as a ATV and my Foreman was the only atv i have ever seen with a motorcycle title !

And my Foreman had the same option's as all the other ATV's i've seen , my brother kept telling me that the tag for my quad would be a utility tag not a motorcycle tag ; but when i took the title to the DMV for a tag they gave me a motorcycle tag instead of the utility tag i had seen on other atv's and at this time Ga didn't require insurance for a motorcycle !

Why this lone quad was titled as a motorcycle i have no idea , all i know is when i got the 1986 Honda TRX350 Foreman from the original owner with just over twenty hour's on it ; and i took the title to the tax commissioner's office and paid tax's and title transfer fee it came back the same way !.........

OldSchool I don't live too far from you, heard of Calico,so just to let you know you are in danger of about a 200 dollar ticket unless the cop is in a real good mood or you are just crossing the road. Some cops don't realize that is legal I had a deputy turn around after seeing me cross after he had passed.Lucky for me I keep a copy of the law with statue number with me.

BigBear, yeah man, Calico. Cool, you guys ever go out to Busco? I haven't been yet, but will be going alot once I get my trailer. So, if you ride alot alone (like me, none of my freinds have ATVs) and you ever want to take a trip toward Greenville, let me know and we can go riding. I haven't gotten my trailer yet, but my brother lives up in Asheville and as soon as I do, it's on. Can't wait to get the quad up to the pinnacle of Grandfather Mountain. I bet there is just endless riding out in Calico huh? Yeah, the trip I make to the trails is really short. I think the cop would have to be just plain bored to stop me and try to ticket me. But you never know, it's the chance I will have to take until I get my trailer cause I am gonna ride no matter what.

Oh, and that's funny, I carry the law around as well, just in case. Some of those cops probably don't know it is legal to cross the street to get to a trail, so keeping that documentation with you is always a smart thing to do.

we do have to register the atvs in montana. It's a permanent tag...must have for all forest service roads anyway.

Default Riding on the road to get to the trails,

i dont know what the law is here in alabama, but ive gone flyin by a sherif car and he didnt do anything. a while back i was puttin around down some back roads and an unmarked county told me i didnt need to be on the road with it and that i had to go home. so idk if its just how bored they are or what. theres no where good within a good 75 miles of here to ride. its a good 2 hour car ride to get to the nearest cheap ($3 per rider) place to ride. everywhere closer is like 25 per rider. so i just ride backroads and dirtroads and stuff like that.
