It does seem to be a popular modification, though I haven't done it on mine. Warn makes some lights specifically for reverse lights on atv's.
I'd probably tap the accessory wire for power. It is fused, key-on. Cole Hersee makes a single throw single pole water proof toggle switch (sealed with internal O ring), and they make rubber boots for them in a variety of colors.

I would think you could tie into the gear position switch, but I'd use a relay as that circuit isn't designed to carry much of a load.
Folks have been known to splice a switch into the gear position switch wires in order to bypass the reverse speed limiter.

You might go over to rinconriders.com. I think there's a wiki on the reverse over ride thing, which would give you info on the location of those wires.

i installed my reverse lights over 3yrs ago great addition. The Suzuki's are easy as they are pre wired simply plug in your lights and they come on when the shifter is in reverse. I used the same bolts that bolt the rear storage box on. I don't know if the honda's are prewired i know the yamaha's are not.
