I just bought a atv to use deer hunting and I was wondering what accessories to put on it. What's the best way to get the deer out with it?

 

I'd start off with a spot light.Gun scabbards are nice options to.How about a camo cover for the quad?It all depends on what type of terrain your in when pulling out the big buck.I also have 4 hand held 40 channel CB radio's that go along with us.[battery operated]We check in every 1/2 hr with each other on the radio's.If the rear rack is large enough,Put the big buck over the rack.You'll be amazed at how easy it'll be to get the big boy back to the camp or truck.What quad did you buy?Good Luck, BILL

 

dont forget a pack for the quad so ya can keep your essentials in i use a gun rack not a scarab becasue it gets in the way of me geting off and on im a big guy get a gps too if you go off trail youll might find it help full

It is sometimes hard to get that big buck or doe on the rack of a quad. My good friend has a trailer with atv tires kind of like the one in last months dirt wheels article on hunting. The only difference is his did not cost over 400$. It is very handy when there is only one of you to load. The other option is pa-pa's atv hoist, but it seems kind of expensive for my taste. Sure looks like it works great though. I am sure they will sell a lot of them.

 

I have hauled a lot of deer w/ my 4 wheelers. I first started by hog tying them to the rack (usually takes two people to hoist them up - we grow 'em big in Wisconsin). Now I don't mess with that any more. I just tie a rope around their antlers.....then run the rope through the rack on the 4-wheeler and pull the head up even with the rack and tie it off. Then drag it back with the hind quarters on the ground. The front half of the deer stays off the ground - so there is no chance of ruining the cape if your going to do a shoulder mount (remember - you want the cape to be in good shape all the way to the back of the rib cage). In addition, the deer follows the 4 wheeler nicely through tight spots in the woods. Also, it's easily done with one person. Oh yeah, and it's cheap - no fancy gadgets required. The only situation were I would not use this method is if I had to drag over a lot of large rocks or through lots of mud. If I can, I usually avoid field dressing the deer until I get closer to camp (or home, if I'm hunting my place). This accomplishes two things: 1)It keeps my hunting spots from stinking and 2)keeps the body cavity clean (if it is dry and dusty). I only do this if I can get it out right away, otherwise I field dress it on the spot. Good luck.

 

P.J. - I like your atv instructions for hauling Bad-Boy Buck out of the woods. This is my first year using an atv and you make it sound easy. However, it was great exercise manually dragging my game out of the woods. I suppose that exercise won't be missed.

 

In Arkansas, we always did the easy way. I guess we're still behind the times in technology. Unless rigamortis has set in, you can normally tie the deer up fairly compact and haul it on the front rack. We normally had a rider on back or a cooler, so we just used the front. We always had either 250 or 300 hondas or maybe a yamaha 225, and they had no problems at all. The thing about putting it up front is that you don't have that extra weight on the rear if you are having to climb out of some steep spots. As far as gear goes, it just depends on how into the quad accessory scene you are. Some guys have a pair of brown coveralls with plastic wal-mart orange on and are packing out a deer on a 1986 230 quadrunner. Their sole accessorie is a good long rope. Others have $200 mossy oak breakup polarfleece outfits with a thousand pockets and a tailor made blaze orange vest. These guys are carrying out a deer with a 2000 model rem. edition Sportsman with more lights, bags, scabbards, mounts, winches, toolboxes, and other miscellaneous crap on it than a Bass Pro shops ATV accessory expo. They may even have a custom made deer trailer with stirrups for the deers legs. Really, you only NEED so much. Now what you WANT, is whats important. I want a lot of cool junk to put on mine personally. Not so much as people whose hobby is chroming out the engines on lawnmowers, but I still like a few neat accessories.

This is not really relevant to this thread, but anyway I had put away my black powder rifle for the season (without harvesting this year). I was made aware of a late season mule / whitetail hunt at the end of this month. I am now happy guy again! Here is the relevant part - all I use on my quad is a gun rack mounted on the front rack ($30.00). Have'nt really needed anything else. You can go crazy on all the stuff available for quads, all of which can certainly enhance the ATV experience. The only question really is how much do you want to spend?
