Winch Question
#1
Question is: I can get a brand new superwinch for free, thing is its basically a winch which isnt really for quads. Its either a 3000 or 3500lb. winch for light truck useage I guess. Would that be o.k? or would it use too much juice? Maybe abit too heavy? Physical size too big? Any thoughts? I thought if people use slightly bigger ones, then "hey" I can have a free winch, just get me the mounting hardware/ect.

SuperWinch makes a wide range of models besides ones specifically for ATV's.
No matter! The price if right! Buy a winch mount (custom drilling may be necessary), or get some steel plate, cut, weld (if necessary), and drill it, bolt it to your quad, and voila! You've got instant megawinch!
Depending upon the model winch you have, level-wind may present some difficulty--ATV models have tension plates insuring proper spooling; if yours does not, take some care fashioning a hawse fairlead (horizontal slot cut in front vertical plate) or roller fairlead (you can buy one of these) to guide the cable onto the spool.
Current-wise, you'll probably never see the winch's full pull potential because the ATV power generation and storage system are inadequate; so what? You've got enough juice available (typically, from a 14 a/h battery) to unstick a quad!
Go for it! Good luck!

You are forgetting the most important question. Can you get us one at the same price (grin)?
I would even be willing to pay shipping and handling.

Sorry! Cant get anymore at that price! Actually it is a new winch we have at work we bought a couple years ago for a project, and ended up not even using it! So it has been sitting around collecting dust! It is a SuperWinch model X2F 3000lb and it has the Hawse fairlead, plus its a free spooling model. I checked the specs. and its the same size as the 1500 or 2000 lb models. So I'll get the mounting hardware and decent switch and Im in business!

Good point, Wannabee! Bloodtrail, currently working with a SuperWinch X2 3,000 # package, SuperWinch technical support (Mr. Jolly) told me the consequences of ATV operation mentioned in my previous post.
While I have the remote switch (solenoid) kit, you may want to inquire about a lower-cost manual switch adequate to handle this puller (current draw at 3,000 # pull exceeds 200 amps; as stated, unlikely to be drawn long from an ATV!). Otherwise, if the X2 model is the one under discussion, you might look into removing and relocating the winch-mounted switch.

Below is the website for Superwinch. Give them a call or email their technical information folks and get the answer from the horses mouth. You might find the battery/alternator capacity of and ATV isn't enough to handle winches designed for larger vehicles. Let us know what they say.

A dealer told me two big winch horror stories. One of his customers mounted a big(3000 or 3500 not sure exactly on the size) winch on his foreman and it bent the frame. Honda refused to warranty the frame s it was the fault of using a winch that was too big. Another guy's Big Winch broke it's mount and almost came through the front frame of his Big Bear.
