IS A WINCH REALLY NECCESARY?

I do alot of riding with friends threw mud, rocks and rough terrain. No one has got stuck yet. I am the only utility quad with three sport quads. But does anyone reccomend that i should get a winch for futue problems? thank you

For myself,a winch is just about useless.I never venture out by myself in anything that is doubtful[heavy mud, swamps, ect]without KNOWING that help is around the corner. My bro and I mud alot and we both are equipped with 20ft tow ropes. But that sure does'nt mean that winches are'nt practical for other quad riders. To each their own,for me,I'll stick with my tow ropes.=====BILL

you might want to consider a "come a long" in leiu of an electric winch,a winch is very convienent to get you or others out of that bottomless pit you thought was just a puddle.....a come a long will do the same thing...its just a little more time consuming to unstrap from your rack, hook to the quad, etc, etc.Cost of come a long,20-40 dollars depending on the quality...and a couple 20ft tow ropes for xtra reach...Bottom line is if you find yourself stuck more than you want to be setting up that comealong, its time for the electric winch...

It all depends on your individual wants and needs. Me personally, I wouldn't own an atv that wasn't four wheel drive and equipped with a winch. I mainly use my machine while hunting and for plowing snow. I have a Warn A2000 and even if it only gets used a few times a year it is well worth the cost. I had a bad experience using tow straps, I had a brand new strap break while trying to free a stuck quad and the metal hook on the end nearly killed a good friend. I know winches are not 100% safe but I would trust the slow pull of a winch over the "Slingshot" effect of tow straps. If you search around a little, I think there are some good deals out there on winches. I got a new in the box Warn A2000 with the Warn accessory kit off of E-bay for $215.00 including shipping. The mounting kit was another $50.00 from Cabelas, I feel this was well worth the cost just to have a little added "insurance".
Here in Utah during the typical fall hunting seasons we may see weather ranging from the mid 70's to below zero with rain or snow. Many of the areas I like to hunt are far more accessible with an atv than a pickup and I prefer to know that if necessary I have atleast one option if for some reason I become stuck or go off the road. I also use the winch to raise and lower my snowplow but this is a matter of convenience, not neccessity. Good luck.

Mudmanatv4X4, if you ask how much it costs to pay for a yacht's upkeep, you can't afford one, they say.
If you ask whether a winch is a necessity, given the scope of riding you do, you've answered your own question, and the answer is, "No."
You received good advice about a comealong as a low-cost insurance policy. Others, who HAVE gotten stuck (unlike yours and your buddies' experience), or who ride alone, may appreciate the convenience of an electric winch.
Necessity? No. Convenience? In my experience, yea, verily.

The come-a-long is a thrifty investment that will suffice for your needs. There is also a hand-cranked device that mounts on your rack with what looks like a tow strap that you use to "reel" yourself in. It will pull in 900 pounds. It may be something for your mininal needs.

Change YOUR mind, Andy Bassham? Who'd EVER presume to change your mind? Not I!
Now, there's no reason to apologize to SuperWinch owners because you don't like SuperWinches! Doesn't hurt SuperWinch owners' feelings at all! (You only said you disliked the winches, not the owners.)
However, you do leave them in suspense. An educated and articulate ATVer like you doubtless holds a logical basis for his firm convictions, justifying his dislike of SuperWinches; you generously share your opinion, but not the reason for it.
Exactly why, Andy, DO you dislike SuperWinches?

While I too would like to know that answer, I'll bet it cannot be answered in a logical cognative manner.
It would be like saying, why do Polaris owners dislike Honda and the reverse. It's almost as if it is inexpressable other than to say preconcieved notions as to superiority, whether factual or not.
I'm really interested, however, due to someone who only has a winch due to a promotion and didn't shop the brands to discover the best value for their specific uses?
Why sir, would you make such a blanket statement about Superwinch? Bear in mind, I'm not being critical, I am in the market to purchase, that is why I ask. Is there something else I should consider before I buy?

Winch necessary- No.
Big tires necessary- No.
Comealong- No.
Rack extensions- No.
Clutch kit- No.
Aluminum wheels- No.
Fuel- Yes.
Oil- Yes.
Helmet- Yes if you don't want a hundred people on this site lecturing you night and day on how stupid you are for not wearing one. I'll not touch on that any more.
True 4wd- No.
Locker- No.
Its just another accessory that costs money and some people use while others never do. I have one that I got in a promo for $100. I have used it to save my butt a few times, but it is by no means a necessity. Its nice to have, but I wouldn't pay $300 for a Warn if I didn't have one,and I don't like the Superwinch. (sorry superwinch owners, but thats me and my mind won't change)
