Dragging logs?

Dragging logs?
Kind of a simple question here but was wondering which is better if better applies.
Is it better to drag a log backing up using the winch hook with tow strap or going foward with the strap hooked on the hitch ball?.
I recently bought a 700 KQ and been using it for cutting wood.It does great at dragging reasonable size logs, just wondering if the 2500 Warn winch housing could handle repeated stress.
Thanks

X2 Use the hitch as it is the sturdiest lowest center point of gravity on the bike therefore giving you the strongest most powerful part of the bike to tow with.

It depends on how far you're going to move the wood in my mind. If less than 100 feet or so I'd back up attaching the strap or cable to a good hard point. This helps you see if the log is going to get caught or not. If going a good distance it's good to attach to a hitch although I wouldn't use the ball if possible. They can break off with a good enough sudden shock but probably wouldn't. The best way is to get the log off the ground like Vinny showed or use some kind of wheeled rig to keep the butt of the log from digging in. Here's how we were doing the first way. Yeah, the gears in a winch aren't designed for a shock load. If while dragging the log with the winch line it tumbles or snags on something and the line goes slack and snaps tight you can break a lot of gears in the winch.
I've used a tow strap to my front bumper when I need to drag something out of the trail or whatever.
