Gator vs pos polaris

in 2wd on grass or dirt neither will go anywhere. unless one weighs a significantly amount more, its harder to pull more weight and win. Polaris in 4wd will drag u down the road or field. its a pointless game really. only end up with torn up machines.

I've never hooked up to anything I couldn't pull

If equal weights with equal tires neither is going to pull the other one. Had a Sportsman X2 500 that treated me very well even though I beat it like a bad dog. Pulled an industrial sized 4 cylinder wood chipper with it when our 4wd trucks with rear lockers couldn't get it up a slick grass slope.
As said, if the Polaris is in 4wd it will pull the JD because it has more traction.

If I'm ever in the market for something to pull atv's around the house, I'll have to check out the gator.
But going by what I see out on the trails, it would seem the Polaris would be a better choice. And judging by the numbers of both being sold, others must agree.

A 350cc Gator is a decent toy for kids to play with but I wouldn't use it for serious pulling. A Sportsman with twice the engine and 1500 pounds towing capacity would be better than a Gator with 900 pounds capacity.

It's all about design. The two are totally different.
I can brag all day long about my bike getting 40mpg compared to the 17 I get in the truck. But which one can hold 5 people and a quad in the back?
