Default Thoughts on Yamaha Wolverine for general purpose 4x4 quad?

Anyone here have experience with the 350 wolverine? Looking at it as a beginner type quad for trail riding as well as hunting use.

Older Wolverines had the 350 with a high range only if I remember right. Decent all around machine but it's nice having a machine with low range for when you're in the rocks, and deep mud. In rocks (especially hill climbs with good sized rocks) it's good to have the low range to crawl up and over. In the mud you want a good amount of power to keep the tires spinning. In high range, thick mud would really tax a 350. Low range it would probably do okay. For casual trail riding and even bringing a buck out, the Wolverine should do okay. Make sure it has the racks on it.

Don't have much experience with wolverines but i for the purposes you said you would be using it for I think you should take a look at a sportsman 500. In the dirttrax magazine it was rated the best trail atv ever made and I've pulled things with my 2013 500 that weigh alot more than your buck

I agree with standitup, if you want to go in deep mud etc. I would get a Polaris sportsman or bigger 4x4

Thanks guys I already got the Wolverine though. It's the 450 model but still very easy to ride which is what I wanted. Also if I were picking a bigger quad it would be a grizzly I have had too many problems with polaris machines in the past.

So??? What are your thoughts on your decision for the Wolverine for an all around atv? Does it have the low range?

I'm pretty sure Yamaha introduced low range on the Wolverine when they made the 450 version. Could be wrong...

The old 350s were 5 speed semi-autos...no low/high range. I also believe that the 450s brought the cvt tranny.

I have a 2000 model.

They are a good quad for someone who wants to do casual trail riding and light utility work. Lightest 4x4 quad ever made at ~480 lbs or so dry. Nimble chassis for a 4x4 and plenty of suspension travel for spirited riding in the woods. The motor has good power but it's not a 500+cc big bore, so don't expect effortless towing of a 1000lb trailer or a 60+ mph top end.
As mentioned it has no low range so it's not a mud monster or hardcore rock crawler. But for those who don't use their quad as a submarine or try to crawl over Volkswagen-size boulders on a regular baisi will likely be pleased.

They have a high range but no low range you mean. They made a newer CVT 350 wolverine but it was 2wd only with no racks.

I think the 5 speed 350 4x4 wolverine would do fine for light utility work. My 350 Grizzly/Bruin has the same 348cc motor without a low range also and has a tow capacity of 1,100lbs but it is geared lower since it will not get much over 45mph which is much slower then a 350 wolverine.

I have loaded my 350 without a low range pretty heavy on a camping trip.
