Belt VS Gears
Get a manuel so you dont have to take time to do that stupid crap! Gears are the real deal baby! Through a stream or mud do we stop?? No we keep it going baby! Auto Do we?? Hell no we gotta have a little belt slip first and rev the motor for about a hour to get ours to even move again lol. Im jk I wouldnt mind having Auto but the 5 spd is for me!!!!!!

I have went through plenty of water/mud (at a reasonable speed, I might add) simply trying to get from point A to point B and have never had a belt slip once ('00 SP500).
With that said, why would I ever want to go 'back' to a belt drive when I can NOW purchase the following?:
3 simple 'rugged' gears with plenty of torque and the option of manual shift; a motor with PLENTY of horsepower moving a machine 'well over' a hundred pounds lighter than mine and a ride that blows anything made today out of the water? (uhhhh, can you say, 4-wheel independent suspension?)
Alright...............if I 'had' to purchase the Grizzly; I wouldn't be disappointed (LOL).
But, as far as I'm concerned, until some manufacturer can prove that they employ enough 'boys out back' that can consistently/successfully bring 'breakthrough' technology to the marketplace and 'make it work'........................any discussion that doesn't place the Rincon on top of the sport/utility heap (for now) is a reflection on the intelligence of the people in it.
Strong words that should only be taken to heart by those that enjoy discussing 'the very best' of machines in production today.............and who also don't let the reality of the machine 'they' chose due to 'financial realities'; cloud their judgement and reveal their 'true' bias.

The Rincon is quite a machine, but I don't think I would go so far as to say it was better than any other machine out there, at least not for all people.
Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to belittle it, I think it is a great machine, but having a 3 speed tranny with torque converter doesn't automaticly put it on top of the heap any more than not having disk brakes & locking front differential disqualifies it. The best utility machine is the best one for the work you have in mind.

Farmr123,
I set on my first Rincon the other day and well its sure a nice machine --- its huge.
Pretty soon a quad from Honda is going to be the same size as a WWII jeep the GI's drove.
I am not going to trade in my 98 TRX300 4x4 just yet.

It is apparent that you may be leaning towards the Honda Rincon as your machine of choice. However, your statement:
"..any discussion that doesn't place the Rincon on top of the sport/utility heap (for now) is a reflection on the intelligence of the people in it."
belies your pure predjudice. That is the equivelant of an evolutionist teacher telling her students that smart people beleive in the THEORY of evolution, and only simpletons believe in the Bible.
You discredit your entire post and any related opinions mentioned therein with that single statement.
In addition there are the facts:
The ground clearance and wheel travel of the Rincon are comparable to my golf-cart!!! Not what I would personally call 'top of the heap'. Heck, my wife's Ford Taurus has better ground clearance and wheel travel than that!
(Maybe you like golf-carts, so all the more power to you.)
( A forward post prompts a forward response. Am I out of line?)

I have owned and/or operated belt drives,gear drives,Electric Shift,Rocker Shift,Hondamatic,OK,you get the point!!
It is MY early opinion that the Honda Rincon does offer the very best Auto trans on todays 4x4 ATVs.Time will tell for sure?Coming off a few 4x4 belt driven ATVs that just were maintenance nightmares, the new Auto trans on the Rincon is a pleasure to own.Smooth as silk shifting, and the option to shift manually are nice. There is no worrying about belt slip or how much your belt/clutched may be worn with this trans. There is no maintenance either on this trans.
The brakes stop on a dime and SO FAR,the front drums have not leaked in a drop of debree.BOTH front tires spin together in 4wd,seems like Honda FINALLY got their Torque Sensing front Differential right.I did some mud riding last wk and know this.
So far,I really like the new Rincon.

Farmr 123,
thanks for the kind words, actually, coming from you,I'd expect nothing less.I certainly dont expect to have anywhere near the problems with the Rinny that I had with my two Polaris.I did like the Polaris ATVs,but the upkeep was the worst of ANY ATV I have ever owned.I currently also have 4 new 2002 Recons and they have never been back to the dealership for anything since getting them in June.I hope the Rinny lives up to Honda's reputation for quality and reliability.Time will tell.
