Belt VS Gears

Just something i'm curious about, when getting 28 inch tires, why would someone with belt drive and clutches get these big heavy tires, as a previous owner of a 600 Grizz, which had a great clutch system, but I would not of put these tires on it as it must put one Hell of a load on the belt, NO?
I was on the Polaris forum and you got guys with huge heavy tire kits, what are they thinking, will this not wear the clutches real fast and blow alot of belts as they smoke belts alot with just stock tires.
This is one of the main reason's I went back to gears, had no problems with my clutch, but found out that 1 clutch plate installed would cost 800.00 when it did wear out. OUCh, that's when I started thinking of gears again.
So now i'm a Bombadiere guy and like the machine I have as it seems tough like my old big bear with lots more power and I can put 28's if I want and pull heavy loads and don't have to worry about belts and repairs, its too bad most people have to learn the hardway, right?

I have a forman 450 and went for a run with a buddy who has a polaris 500 sportsman. In the middle of a stream corossing his bike wouldn't move due to a leak from an incorrectly installed belt cover at the dealer the previous week. I gladly towed him home!! No auto for me, its all gears!!

WE USES OUR 02 PRAIRIE 650 FOR PULLING. WE TRAVEL AROUND TO ATV PULL'S IN MAINE AND IN CANADA. IT HAS A BELT DRIVE AS DO ALL THE BIKES THAT DO WELL IN THE PULLS.
I RUN 4 PITBULL II PULLING TIRES ON IT, THE SIZE IS MARKED ON THE TIRE AS 26-12-12'S, BUT THEY REALLY ARE AROUND 31" HIGH, WE DON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEM'S WITH BELT'S AND SPIN THE HOLE LENGHT OF THE TRACK.

I have had both, and I like the auto myself.
One thing that I feel not enough people know, the BELT is a wear item. If you try to get the absolute maximum use possible out of the $30 belt, you WILL groove your $400 pulley. When it starts shifting funny, take the cover off & look (takes only 10-15 min in most cases) Measure the belt width, and replace it if it is narrower than specs. While you have the belt off, if you have a Polaris machine, check the clutch buttons. Costs only $5 for the whole set, and aren't that hard to replace.
Gear machines, however, are much more maintanence-free. I just prefer the belt drive and am willing to do a little more maintanence to gain the benefits of it. Oh, and I also got 5000+ miles on my original belt, but I run the standard sized tires.

Miller tire, Wauseon, Ohio, I think they have a web site.
they are made for pulling, with cut tread, which is molded into them. they are like the ones they use on pickup trucks that pull. They are
26-12-12, but are really about 31" high. They cost about $250 ea. delivered and tax. If you are pulling, they are the tires to have.

Belts are great till you are 50 miles from anywhere and you take on a little water in the belt case. Especially a Polaris where you have to take the case off to drain it. No more belts for me. As soon as I sell my Scrambler I am going back to gears.

If you get water on your belt 50 miles from nowhere on a Kawi put it in neutral and rev it for a few minutes then go on about your merry way.

Polaris works the same way, just put it in neutral, rev it about halfway out, and in a couple minutes, you are going again.
The main reasons for water on the belt are a bad or improperly installed cover seal, and plowing through water at a high rate of speed. The water splashes around so much, some spray will get into the intake of the belt vent, and wet the belt.
The newest machines have the intake clear up by the gas cap, so water doesn't splash into it anymore. I suppose you could make it get there, but you would really have to try. Much improved over my Xplorer, where the intake is kind of behind the fender, where just splashing through a 4 inch deep puddle at 20 MPH can get the belt damp.
