I have an Eiger 400 Auto and am looking to get a winch and plow. I'm not sure what size winch would be sufficient. Is there any reason to get a 2500 or a 3000 lb. winch. Would a 2000 or 1500 be sufficient? The Quad weighs only 600 lbs. What is the use of getting a 2g winch? I do plan on using it for other pulling chores such as pulling small logs, etc. Thanks

 

I would get at least a 2000lb winch as I have seen even the 2000lb units work very hard to free badly stuck quads.The suction of breaking a quad free of the mud can result in much more force than the quads weight being required.

 

You will want at least a 2000 lb for good pulling power against the suction of mud/bog. I have a warn 2000, but would like to upgrade to a 3000lb.

 

Get yourself a 2000lb winch. From past posts it appears that a 2500lb winch wont pull anymore then a 2000lb because an ATV electrical system cant supply the needed amps to take advantage of a 2500lb winches increased pulling power. I have my doubts that even a 2000lb winch pulls a full 2000lbs for the same reason. If you dont think a 2k winch will be enough for you, get a pully block ($20) to double the winches pulling power.

 

For a vehicle, we used to figure twice the vehicle weight would be a place to start. Never buy the smallest, it will let you down more than once.

The pull rating is with the cable all the way out and the cable winding up on a bare spool. I would also get a tree saver and a ****** block. That will double your pulling power, it will be easier on your electrical system. Another reason for a heavier winch, it doesn't work as hard.
