Default Puget Sound/Seattle NW Area Riders Meet HERE!!!

Happy belated Birthday Karl. I hope you had a good birthday.

Well we went over to Wenatchee Saturday and brought the jet ski's. Saturday was alittle windy but was 85 degrees. Fun time on the jet ski's. Sunday OH MY GOD it was hot. It was 96 with no wind. Pretty much we were in the water jet skiing or sitting in the water. To say the least i'm pretty krispy. Today is suppose to be over 100 over there. Not really looking forward to going over there this weekend for a concert. The tickets was bought for me. The concert is Summer Jam (kube 93) and i'm not to in to the whole rap thing. It should be interesting because sometimes i can't keep my mouth shut. . Anyways we had a blast on the jet ski's and i think we are going to purchase them. One of the jet ski's wouldn't start yesterday but the boys figured it out.

My boyfriend didn't have a good weekend though. Sunday we had the cooler tied down on the back of the jet ski's and we were headed to the sandy beach and the hooks came undone and everything in the cooler was either floating or sunk. I had ALOT of beer, 8 wine coolers, chip dip, pop, (not open) black velvet bottle and a half bottle of captain morgan's, two big deli sandwich's and of course ice. Well he finally showed up at the beach and alls he had was about 8 beers and the sandwich's. Back to the store regan went and we changed the routine alittle bit. Finally got food and drinks to the sand beachy. Then justin went out for a beating on the ski and got thrown off and lost his brand new sunglasses. LOL By 5 o'clock yesterday we started our way back home. I jumped in the drivers seat (pulling the ski's) and i noticed the tranny was getting hot it was about 230 degrees. We stopped in leavenworth checked the tranny fluid let it cool off alittle bit. Regan was now pulling the ski's so the only thing we had was our camper. Justin was driving now and we started going up hwy 2, well we only had 1 and 2 gears. 40 miles an hour up the hills and finally it shifted into 3rd gear. No stopping now, we finally made it home after being stuck in traffice through gold bar and sultan. We get home and justin goes and checks his semi and the les schwab guy never came to change his tires. Plus now he has a flat tire. So he calls his les schwab guy and he had a heart attack and has been in the hospital. So Justin gets so sleep in today and i had to get up at the crack of dawn to come sit at a desk. Boy does vacations where you out!!!!

Well, I got my petition for the Forest Service all done and printed. Will start getting them out this week. In the Olympic Forest alone the USFS has 1,197 mile of road they don't maintain anymore. This would be perfect for offroaders. Most of the other National Forest have more miles than the Olympics(not as rough and inaccessable). But if we don't ask, we will never get it.

Default Puget Sound/Seattle NW Area Riders Meet HERE!!!

Had a great couple of days down in Florence over the weekend. A friend and I left late on Friday in his motorhome and stopped at a rest area just south of Salem. We woke up early on Saturday and finished the drive. We were on the sand by 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Man, was the wind ever blowing on Saturday. By mid-afternoon it was like driving through a sand blaster. So, we mainly stuck to the tree trails and the trails along the beach. Those tree trails are really fun in the sand. It is a whole different feeling than riding dirt trails. The trails along the beach (just behind and on top of the grass dunes next to the beach) area also fun. There are many trails that intertwine and its a good spot for a little follow the leader. That is until, some some yokel in YFZ comes down the opposite way for a head on welcoming. Luckilly, we both slammed the brakes in time so it was only a gentle "hello" with no damage done. We did about 75 miles of riding on Saturday in 3 outings.

On Sunday, the weather and sand were perfect for riding. So, we played in the open sand all morning. I got the award for the most dramatic wreck! I was climbing this big, steep dune on my Vinson and got just a hair's breadth from the top when I started losing power and momentum. I thought I had enough momentum to make a turn and run back down. I got halfway through turning around and it all stopped. With the weight of my Vinson, it started sliding sideways and tipped. I bailed, but could not jump up hill as the quad was already going over. I jumped down hill and immediately saw the 600+ pound machined headed straight form me (flipping sidways). I scrambled, rolled and jumped until I was just clear and the Vinson flipped on by me. It must have rolled (flipping sideways) 50 or 60 feet downhill in pretty spectacular fashion. In the end, there was no serious damage to the quad (I think one side of the handlebars got bent) and no damage to me. It certainly got my adrenaline pumping, though. And, lesson learned: don't try to make a turn on a big dune like that -- dig in to stop and then and back down!

Earlier, I had a fun, but less spectacular wreck. I was coming over a small dune and gave it too much gas at the top. I jumped off the top in a pretty steep wheelie. Well, when the back wheels hit the ground, they spun the front up and nearly over. I went flying off the back, but luckily my backwards push, pushed the quad back down on its wheels and it rolled to a gentle stop. Needless to say, I was pretty sandy by the time we stopped riding on Sunday.

I'm starting to appreciate how much fun the sand can be. I still like running the trails more than the open dunes. But, the dunes have their attraction.

Wow! Sounds like you had a good lesson in iniertia and gravity! Glad you're ok... and your quad too!

I would consider revising the last part of your revised maneuver...

1. Dig it in (bury it to the axles).
2. Lock all four wheels (set the parking brake on a 4x4 automatic)... sporties can just be left in gear.
3. Pull the front bumper down and around (let gravity be your friend).
4. Get back on and ride it down forward.

If you ride it down in reverse, you risk going out of control rather quickly. If you tap the rear brake going in reverse for any reason, you'll pancake yourself.

If you can't turn it around, get off the machine. Go to the front and walk it down by controlling the front brake (and throttle if needed to get out of the hole). Your weight over the bumper should keep it from going over.

Done this many times with the scrammy and preddy...

Don't want to see ya getting hurt... that's my job.

Hey Stan,

Ditto what Karl said. Much easier to go down forward then backwards.
It is pretty hard turning them big Utes around though, that sucks.
Glad ya had one day of not so windy. We spent 2 days in the sand blaster and 2 days with perfect riding conditions.

Glad ya didn't get hurt.....

Wish we could have hooked up Saturday morning. Our group was out riding Saturday morning, well all except me that was, I was cleaning and packing up Not enough quads for everybody to go out
They were out from about 10:00 until 12:30, riding back that way by the trails also.
A group on my Rincon, the LT80, 250ex, and grey Raptor350.
We didn't pull out until 1:00.....

I liked the trails in the trees also, those were fun

We really want to go back, just need to find where to stay. I'm sure we could show up and there would be spots available, but the res site shows all full. It did for this week also, but there were many open spots.

Hope we can get back down there.

A man who speaks from experience Ive witnessed such reverse pankaking in da dunes many times on steeper hills.

Thanks for the tip! Riding sand is a whole different world. These heavy utility quads act a lot different than the sporties do as well. I can't imagine riding a Polaris in that soft sand. It is pretty nerve racking to be two feet from the top of a big dune climb and have it just start dying. Unfortunately, my quad does not have a parking break, it has a parking gear. That may be a bit trickier to operate from the front bumper, but definitely safer than the manuever I tried!
