Ok i don't know how many of you are hunters, or have guns, but i need some options. I currently have a 30-06 and i carry the heaviest gun at my camp. It has to much of a kick for me. There is no since in practicing when i get so nervous about the kick and I can't hit the target. I want a lighter gun to carry but i want enough power to kill a elk, with not such a big kick as a 30-06. My brother was talking to me acouple of days ago at his work and his boss mentioned to him something about a gas relay that is in the stock which takes away alot of the kick. I went to Gi- Joes and was asking the gun guy about it and he was looking at me like of course i was a female and i didn't know WTF I was talking about. There is also a relay that you can screw into the end of the barrel which takes away the kick BUT it is louder than heck i guess. The reasons that i'm looking for a new gun is because yes it's WAY to heavy to carry in the woods, 2nd i have a crack in the stock, 3rd the bolt action is way to loose, and 4th the safety is harder than hell to release. My brother thought a 270 or a 300 would be a good size for me. What do you guys think?

I would like to get a gun in the next couple of weeks. I leave to go hunting in less than a month and i would like to practice with it before i get in the woods.
My wife also does not like '06s because of their recoil. But she absolutely loves her Remington 700 (same rifle as the 06 was) in 270 Winchester. With the '06 after like about 5 rounds her groups would spread all over the target with each succeeding round. With the 270, the groups are never bigger than1 1/2" at a 100 yards and she will shoot as many as 40 rounds at a range session. Don't get a 300 as they have more recoil than an 06. The wife's favorite western Washington hunting guns are a Marlin 30-30 levergun or a Ruger 44 Mag Carbine. Both light weight, short and easy on the shooter when it comes to recoil. The 270 for Eastern Washington and a 30-30 for Western Washington would be my recommendation.

Like bear and your brother said. 700 remington in the 270 chambering is one hell of a rifle. Its my favorite rifle to shoot. They have enough power to kill anycritter with a well placed shot

Hmm, something to think about.

All of my hunting is done over in eastern washington. Do you really think a 270 would have enough power to kill a elk? I just want a really good gun, i dont' need a scope as i have a leupold scope. I will have to go check out the 270's.

Thanks bear.

I've asked you this before, and am still amazed at this number. You have to find out for us why it is that you are able to get it so cheap!! I have contacted at least three companies, and all are looking at around $15- $25 per quad per month! Is it because you are a member of HRC? Do you use Progressive for your home/auto as well? Give us the inside scoop, mister!!!!!
This is because you are not old. Ask your Progressive agent what the age limit is on cheap insurance. My Farmer's Insurance agent in Lake Stevens (Frontier Village) also sells Progressive insurance, I get a cheap rate too. They paid to re-build my 03 when it went skipping across the water, no questions asked... well ok, one... wtf did you do?
If OLD means the difference between paying $130 a year and $331 a year..........someone needs ta do some splainen! lol

Man getting old...you have to take the good with bad I guess! And Karl, I didn't think you was as old as the other fogey's on here....did you just admitt to being OLD!!!!
Old enough to only pay $66 a year for full coverage per quad . But bear in mind DM, qualified for good insurance rates before I did.... (had to get that in there...).
DAMN YOU Karl!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES I AM old & PROUD of it, maybe I should see how much MY quad insurance would be LOL, I did check into it @ one time but when your insuring 7 of them I GAVE UP!! YES we should have them insured but whenever we are gone, the quads are more than likely w/ us!!! My neighbors keep a good eye on my place I really can't imagine someone just walking in my yard????? They'd have to have a pretty big set if ya know what I mean!!! Cuz if the dogs didn't get them...................my bro & his 9mm probalby would

Racergirl whacha want me too bring???? LMK if you already did I'M SORRY I am losing my mind

Just got back from looking @ Kart tires for the mini, think we'll forget that idea, I hate to have to buy 4- 6" rims, them turn around & buy 4- 8" rims so I KNOW the blaster rears fit it(but one of the lug nuts got rounded off trying to get it off , think htye had 600lbs torque on it), so NOW I need to get DJ's dremel & cut it off I guess MAN I hate when that happens LOL so once we get that off he'll run tamers ont he rear & Maggiesboy I THINK those Burris' will be for sale I work a good deal for ya!!

The grain bullet you use will determine the amount of recoil you get, also the weight of the gun, the heavier the gun the more energy is required to move it.

I like my 30-06... If you're just hunting white tail and black tail, you can go with a 150 grain bullet. Mulies might require a 180. If you're hunting larger animals such as elk, you're better off using a 220 grain for more impact. If you're using a heavy grain, go target practice with a lighter one and see if it's too much recoil, you may change your mind.

I actually like using a 30-30 for hunting deer. It's light, lever action and you have to get in close. My father-in-law has one with buck-horn sights, fun to use. Not recommended if you're not out for a challenge. Bagging a deer is secondary in my opinion, I just like getting out when I go.

hmmm yeah i guess if your a girl you need them heavy bullets to kill chit. 130 grain outta the 270 is sufficient to drop an elk. you shouldnt really be shootin critters past 200 yards anyway. Unless its a real nice bull sittin on that ridge 1500 yards away.. but thats when you pull out the 50BMG and lob one over
