Reality bites sometimes. Unlike desktop computers that are easy to interchange parts, laptops are not
if you are lucky enough to locate a replacement drive for it, great, but it may be expensive. you'll most likely be better off replacing the computer for a a little more money.
nwcutie and another friend of mine purchased nice laptops for $479 + tax (no rebates) dvd burners and all!
you can also use a usb drive if you don't want to spend the money ( a detached cd or dvd drive that connects by a usb wire)
this is all assuming it's your dvd drive. as Jayna said, try a different disk, if you have a can of air (for electronics) you may be able to blow it clean. and if you make it through the Tacoma area (actually University Place to the west), feel free to look me up. I'm no expert but I've had my hands on a few, I'd be happy to take a look and suggest options. feel free to call me too at 253-297-9876 (It's OK everyone, my phone number is all over the web with my real estate stuff)

Not the hard drive that is not working, it's the DVD that allows putting software into the machine. Also will burn a cd for pictures and such.

First things first, if you are talking about the 3.5" floppy drive, did you try a new floppy? Sometimes the floppy goes bad.
Second, do you really need the floppy drive? You would do better to disable the floppy drive and invest in a USB thumb drive. You can pickup a 1GB thumb drive for under $30 to your door. Also referred to as a travel drive. I shop at Newegg mostly(they have a good review system as well so you have something to judge the products by), but sometimes find better deals at PCMall for bigger items including good refurb laptops.
If you are talking about the hard drive, and it's making ugly noises, it's dying and I would suggest you back it up asap. Hard drives are in expensive as well, and depending on your mechanical inclination, not very hard to replace. It's just time consuming to reload all your software.
DM, I still have your old brick hostage. I will get to it very soon.

The Sony laptop has decided to run or a few minutes then it's like the power is shut off. It sounds like the disk drive is working very hard to run and makes a mild scratching/grinding noise. When I took the disk out of it the laptop will come on and stay on with no problem. Seems to me this indicates that an internal overload is being tripped by the disk drive drawing too much amperage.
Question: How big a job is it to change one of these drives out, where can I get the part and is it possible it just needs cleaned and lubricated?
Guess thats more than one question isn't it.

I might suggest an external DVD player/burner. They aren't very expensive at all-less than $50-100 and it plugs into a USB port. With an external DVD player/burner, it is portable to other computers so it's a decent investment since you can use it on another computer(Desktop or laptop)when that old laptop finally gives up the ghost. Plus, with a burner, you will be able to back up anything you need to DVD. JMHO.
LJ and RR. Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated. I took a few things apart and cleaned them up and blew the dust out of things. Now it works. We decided to wipe everything out that was on the disks as SWMBO had already bought a new laptop to take to work with her.
Dug out the recovery disks for the Sony and did that and have the applications disks nearly done. Can't figure out where we "filed" the disk for the wireless hookup. Getting to dang late so will look into that tomorrow.
Wife says I am now officially a computer nerd now. Some fat chance of that!
