Motocross project on Mtn. Loop causes concern
Dear Editor,
For those who use the Mt. Loop Highway east of Granite Falls, please be aware of a major proposed project that if allowed to develop will completely change the quiet and natural beauty enjoyed by so many. Whether you live, hike, bike, fish or just enjoy an occasional scenic drive along this beautiful two-lane highway east of Granite Falls, you will be impacted.
The proposal is for a 75-acre motocross complex on 435 acres of forestland to be rezoned from Forestry to Forestry and Recreation. The three racetracks are to be developed along the north side of the highway approximately six miles east of Granite Falls. The same promoter, Paul Thomas Motorcycle Parks, recently tried to develop a similar project in the Maltby area but was defeated after nearly 1200 people sent letters of protest- the largest number of opposition letters in the history of Snohomish County. It is assumed Mr. Thomas has chosen this quiet rural area in hopes that fewer voices of opposition will be heard.
Motocross tracks are, by nature, environmentally unfriendly. The noise and pollution they produce make it difficult for these facilities to find a suitable location, and existing tracks are being closed or relocated throughout the country as communities become less tolerable of the noise and environmental costs.
Noise levels in areas surrounding the proposed complex will increase by 100-600 percent, depending on location, impacting the residential and recreational users and a large variety of wildlife, including two threatened and endangered species living on and near the site.
The track is expected to draw roughly 150 riders on weekdays, up to 400 riders on weekends and hundreds or even thousands, including spectators, during national circuit events. This extra burden on Mt. Loop Highway will make travel more difficult and dangerous for residents, recreation enthusiasts and the many aggregate trucks using the road. There are approximately 165 parking spaces proposed, yet some events will draw hundreds of participants and spectators resulting in long lines of parked cars along the shoulders. Motocross enthusiasts have every right to enjoy their activity, but only in non-residential areas where such use will not impact wildlife and the environment.
What can you do? Those opposing the project can email the Snohomish County Planning Department Project Manager, Erik Olson at erik.olson@co.snohomish.wa.us or mail him at the Snohomish County PDS, 3000 Rockefeller, Everett, WA 98201 and reference file number 07-101924-000-00-LU. Also, Local Council member (District 1) John Koster, john.koster@co.snohomish.wa.us. A local group has formed to prevent the project, and they can be reached at P.O. Box 1097 Granite Falls, WA. 98252.
Your voice will help keep the Mt. Loop Highway scenic, quiet and safe for future generations.

and this is MY letter I just sent into the editor
I also sent it to the media guy @ CB to see what he thought hope it doesn't sound toThis letter is in regards to Jeff VanDatta's letter on the proposed MX park project on Mt. Loop Highway east of Granite Falls.
This park would be more than a "nusiance" as he made it sound. As a Mother of two boys who race ATV's we as a family do more together with racing and riding and feel the need for the park around this area. If my kids and alot of others we know and race with don't have anywhere to race and ride then what will they be out doing?
They could be doing worse things like hanging out on the streets, doing drugs, vandalism ect.
If this park is built it is a maintained facility for families to go and enjoy themselves and thier sport. It could also bring in money for the local towns along the way with people stopping to buy food, beverages, fuel ect.
With what he says are estimated to be 150 riders on weekdays this seems to be an awful large estimate from what I've seen with other tracks around the area, it is still going to be good for the surrounding communities with money being spent at local businesses. We as riders/racers have had many let downs in the past few years with riding areas and tracks being closed down, you don't see hiking trails, and parks being closed.
I know most of the riders we ride with are always picking up others' garbage(the people that just don't care) and having clean up days at the riding areas we do have, to show that we are responsible and care about our riding area's & don't want to see them shut any more down!!
I personally think this could be a good thing for Granite Falls and the surrounding communities.
And last but not least "a family that plays together, stays together"
So let us racer and riders have a say for once!
Sincerely,
