Default Alaska - Where's the hot spots???

Snug, Your vehicle is usually safe if it is not parked overnite and defiantly do not leave your vehicle past dark on the weekend. The Valley kids party out there and trash your rig if they can. It is a popular spot to dump stolen vehicles, in fact the troopers look there first when you report you vehicle stolen. The thiefs take them out there and strip what they can then torch the rest, probaly to get rid of any evidence left behind. I have seen trucks that have got stuck out there and they were stripped to the mudline then set on fire. I never lleft my Jeep when I got stuck out there, I waited till my buddies showed up to help get it unstuck.

As for when I plan on riding again I was asked that today by my neighbor, he was out there on sunday and went all the way back to the glacier. The kid that was with him wanted to cross the river and climb on the glacier but Tim told him not to as the banks on both sides of the river had ice shelfs and it would be hard to get a quad back up on the ice. I am thinking it will not be till the last half of March before I get any time to take a ride. I am on vacation this week but my wife is in Seatle and I am watching the little ones so I can not go right now and then I have been helping my brother-n-law build hid house. He has been at it a year now and he had to take an extension to finish so I have been helping him to finish. I try to ride a few times in the winter but the summers is when I get my riding and camping in. Tim told me it was a very wet ride back to the glacier.

Be careful when you go out there to ride and take the OLD GLEN, I missed hitting two moose last weekend and a guy hit one this afternoon. The moose have been real active and are crossing the road towards the evenings and you don't see them until they are a hood ornament.AlaskaBoy.

DSXBear, it is no biggee not to ride my snowmachine. The longer it sets it gets me just that further to replacing it. I figure if I wait so long I will tell my wife the kids made off with a part and it would be cheaper to just buy a new one or at least a realy nice used one. Get my drift AKBoy.

Default Alaska - Where's the hot spots???

Well Alaskaboy, we went back out to the Old Glen area. This time we parked at the bridge and rode back. We only went 14 miles back, but the glacier looked awesome. Can't wait to get a little closer next time.
I guess the "dunes" are the hill climb areas out there....right? We played around for a little while there. We saw about 20 other quads while we were riding, and a lot of folks target shooting too.
There is a Kodiak 400 in the paper for $2,400. I went to look at it tonight. It seems to be in pretty good shape. The add said 92, but it ended up being a 94. I ended up giving him 2,200 for it. The winch seems to have a short or lose wire, but I'll figure it out later this week.
Do you think the full time 4x4 will be to hard to drive, or is it a pretty good machine?

Thanks
Doug

Default Alaska - Where's the hot spots???

Hello Doug, You are making me want to go rideing real soon. I got a 3 day weekend coming up the second week of march now, maybe we can get together for a ride? How's the 13th(saturday) sound? It should be a deffiant, unless something goes awry at work but even it does I will get off at 6 am on saturday and will be off that night other wise I will be of friday night and will be all rested. How was the trail back, wet? If you can make it and I can we can always meet at the bridge and go from there.

It will take your wife alittle time to get used to the handling but I do not think it should be a problem for her. Maybe you check to see if they make the WARN 424 for it, it is a bolt on that alows you to engage and disengage with the pull of a lever. I am not sure it is made for that like the Hondas, would not hurt to look into, two wheel will give you better gas milage.
It said it was a 92 but turned out to be a 94? Did you get the title for it or the regestration paperwork? 2,200 sounds awesome, the solenoid could be burnt out on the winch if it was installed right, this goes before the winch does and depending were they are mounted it could of been exposed to too much moisture. I have seen these mounted in the rear wheel well( Come to think of it I need to find out where Yamaha installed mine as it was not in the trunk under the seat) and it gets wet all the time. There was a Grizzly that got stuck in Jim Creek last summer and he was up to his seat and the winch would not work and I think that was the problem because it worked earlier he said. Just a thought. I could be wrong. Hows the tires on it?

Let me know what you are thinking, after all your trail reports i got to get out and put some miles on mine.AKBoy.

Hey Doug, I was having a brain fart. I was thinking it was a 04 and the add said it was a 02, I am not familar with this quad set up. I am assuming it is a auto/manual and does it have high/low range?AKBoy.

It's a 94 model/ Still seemed like a decent price. It has hi/low and 5spd/auto clutch. The tires are about 50-60% They should last her through the summer. I will probably replace hers and mine next season. I may have to work on the 13th, not sure yet. I probably won't find out until a few days before, but it sounds good to me.
What should I expect to pay for a double trailer(used)?

Doug

I'll try and post some pictures tomorrow.

I got mine for 400 bucks from a Major I knew when he ETS out of here, I would think around 500 for a wood decked one and close to 800 for a alunimum, maybe alittle more. Check the Lemon Lot out on base there used to be alot when I was on Ft. Rich(lived with my brother) you might get a good deal. Sams Club used to sell trailers for around 800.

With a 5 speed and high/low it should be able to pull stumps like the Big Bear.

Keep in touch about the 13th. Yes those are the dunes I was talking about, the closest to Glamis as you can find in AK. The target shooters are not as active in the summer if the troopers are there. Too many people dragging trash out there and leaving it after they shot it up has made the troopers start issueing tickets for illegal shooting and endangering people. 2 or 3 years ago they had troopers stationed 24/7 to curb the shootings and of course the underage parties that happen out there and one of the troopers got ran over while trying to make a stop, luckily the mud was soft and the trooper did not get seriously injured. It is a great place now to take the trucks all the way back in and back up to the dunes and let the kids play, pitch a tent and have a wiener fire. Of course ride. Looking forward to photos.AKBoy.

I work in COM. I haven't bought an ATV yet because of the snow. I'm still debating on buying a new one or a used one. My wife will want to ride too and that would mean that I would have to buy two used ones.
