If you know where the property owner lives, go up to their house, introduce yourself and just ask. If you don't know who they are or where they live, go to your local Title Insurance Company and ask their customer service representative for a property profile on the property you would like to ride. This will tell you the owners name and location. Now you can contact them and ask. Be polite, and if they turn you down tell them you understand.
If they give you permission keep a few things in mind.

#1. Keep it quiet. The owners may have given you permission to ride their property but the neighbors will complain if your pipe is load.
#2. Don't bring along a lot of friends unless you have the owners permission.
#3. Don't let your friends ride there without you. You are the one that was granted permission, not them.
#4. If you open a gate, close it behind you.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY
#5. Hvae the property owner meet you on the property and let him have a ride on your quad. Chances are he/she has never ridden one before and has no idea how fun they can be. You may make yourself a new riding partner and a new convert to quads.
Good Luck!

yeah, the problem is some of my friends ride there anyway, i guess its a sand pit, and they say the guy is a real dick, so unfortunately it won't be a nice little old lady or something like that. i was thinking maybe saying how people ride on your land anyway, and if they get hurt then technically they can sue you, but if i sign a piece of paper, i can't sue you... does that make any sense??
thanks

Maybe the guys a "dick" because no one has taken the time to introduce themselves and ask permision to ride on HIS loand. Don't mention being able to sue him, that will only make him angry and then the NO TRESPASSING sign will appear. Then you and your buddies will be the ones getting cited. You won't get anywhere with him with the "people are riding there anyway" tact either. The best way is to try to get to know him. You, or some of your friends, are already riding there WITHOUT permission. Now go talk to him. Show him that you and your friends are not a bunch of hoodlums out to tear up his property. Good Luck. Keep it friendly. That's the only way.

Take Chris142's suggestion. That's a good start. You must offer something in exchange for the previlege to ride on other people's land. Remember, they paid for the land and paid taxes on it... Try offer to clean up the place like pickup trash and stuff like that if nothing else you can offer. If you start with that legal stuff, to me, that sounds like a threat. He'll make sure you don't get near his land.

join a club. network with club members and members from other clubs. once you get access to land, treat it like you own it. that means taking care of it. closing gates, cleaning up, hell, ive even taken my mower out and helped the land owners. always leave the place better than you found it, and make sure that the landowner sees your efforts. he'll appreciate it andf you'll be amazed at how it will open other gates for you.
