Default Silver Lake Dunes Second Weekend in July

OKAY HERE IS THE SCOOP. I AM HEADED TO SILVER LAKE THE SECOND WEEKEND IN JULY WITH MY COUSIN FROM FORT WAYNE. I NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THE PLACE THAT I CAN BEFORE I GO UP THERE. I KNOW THEY CHECK DECIBEL LEVELS AND ALL THE PASS STUFF BUT WHAT ABOUT THE VOUCHER SYSTEM. MY COUSIN SAID THE LAST TIME HE WENT UP THERE YOU HAD TO STAND IN LINE FOR EFOUR HOURS TO GET A VOUCHER FOR SATURDAY. HE SAID HE GOT IN LINE ON FRIDAY AT 5PM AND WAS THERE TILL THEY STARTED HANDING OUT VOUCHERS AT NINE. THAT IS ENTIRELY TO LONG TO WAIT FOR VOUCHERS. WHY DON'T THEY START PASSING THEM OUT AT 12 NOOON SO PEOPLE CAN STILL RIDE THE REST OF THE DAY.

LIKE I SAID ANY INFO ON ANYTHING I MAY HAVE SKIPPED FILL ME IN I WANT TO GO UP THERE PREPARED AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT ANYTHING ONCE I GET UP THERE.

THANKS

First, Don't ask us why they hand out the vouchers at 9. Ask them.

Secondly, Don't forget, you need a state park sticker on both your truck trailering your Quads, and the Quads themselves.

I was there the second week in May, and they where checking spark arrests, and allowing up to 98 db for quads. The guy checking the noise said it's random, and based on how busy they are is how much they let slide. So, I would guess later in the year they are more stringent on the db level.

The dunes are great, but don't forget your paddles!!!

I met a guy in St. Helen in the lot after a ride. We got talking about Silver Lake. In his opinion paddles were not a necessity. He claimed his stock tires on his 450R worked fine. Seems to me to be a waste of time without paddles.

The vouchers are not good for the rest of the year. They are good for the next day only. The rule of thumb on busy weekends, like this time of year, is you get in line about 7 or so. The ranger starts the line moving at 9.

We usually bring the grills to get in line. We cook out on the back of the trailers and shoot the bull for 2 hours.

Also, you can get one voucher per person in one vehicle thru the line. So, if you have a couple of generous folks in your party, they can get a voucher for you, if they have your license plate number. The voucher system, although seems like a pain, is tons better than the wa it used to be. People used to drive to the dunes and have to wait out on the road AAALLLLL day until a spot opened up for them in the parking lot. I personally think this system works great. The only down side is waiting for 2 hours to get the voucher. But who cares, just like anywhere, you follow the rules laid out for that riding park.
