Has anybody ridden the Red Dot Trail by Silver Bay,MN. We are going over there on Labor Day weekend. And were wondering what the riding was like, how many miles, any hotspots or places that we should be sure to ride to. Thanks in advance for the info...

 

The Archer has ridden it and said it was one of the best trails systems in Minnesota. I am planning to go there myself in the next few weeks.
If it is before the Labor day weekend I will post my opinion too.

I had a big post on the Red Dot Trail a while back, it might be worth looking up. I have ridden this trail 3 times. The first two time I wrode the trail I put about 30 miles on my machine without seeing the same parts of the trail. I like the terrain up there because it gives you a good mix of hardpack, mud and "scenic woods riding" The eastern portions of the trail tend to be more rocky. The closer you get to the lake the rockier the terrain is.

Watch out for the strech of trail that runs to forest road 6. The soil is so full of clay it is a tough stretch to ride. I had to use my winch alot through there.

Take the trail up to Bean lake just to see it. It is one of the prettiest things you will ever see. If you like to fish bring a rod, the lake is loaded with trout. The atv trail is the only access to the lake so it is like looking back in time.

Watch out for moose!!!!! My wife and I had an interesting enconter with a young bull. If you are going to be up there around labor day you will be getting into the pre-rut and they will be a little feisty.

Swing by the Beaver Bay chamber of commerce building right off of 61 just before County Road 4 and pick up a trail map. The maps they have are better than the ones you get through the DNR. They are tear and water proof. Plus they are much bigger and they have intersection markers on them that coincide with trail markings that are not shown on the DNR map.

Keep your eyes peeled when you are onthe main trails, there are lots of side trails that turn off of the main trail, they are really fun to ride too.
