There is no way around the rockpile on the strawberry trail. You can go up quite a ways on the squaw ridge trail before you hit the rock garden. There are plenty of trails to ride in the bear river resort area that you don't need 4x4. The forest service really gets upset if you go off the trail in any area. Especially on a trail that borders a wilderness area.
