Default Waynoka OK, Information

Im looking into going here in march. First time in the sand, and im looking for information from people who have been there. Hows the weather at that time of year...rainy, cold?
Is it worth it to bring a 4x4 like a kodiak, or wouldnt it be fun?Im not looking to get big air. Will the stock tires work ok?
How about a 300ex, wih half worn rears? Would it still get around ok? I dont want to buy a set of sand tires, because this may be my only time in the sand.
Any good motels in the area?
Any good safety tips for a sand newbie?
Is the sand tough on air filters and chains...what else?
Is it a fun place to ride for two days?
Thanks

Waynoka is a great place to ride. There are tons of trails and wide open dunes to ride. Both quads would be fun, just depends on what you are looking to do. You might get stuck in a few places with the 300ex without paddles, but for the most part you will probably be able to get around just fine. There are some motels around, but we camped in the first part of april and it was just fine. If I remember right march and april is when they get the most rain but you might want to check weather, you can find historical weather there. Also check out waynoka home page and there is some good info there. Safety tips would be, dont blindly jump dunes, always have a spotter. Also ride slow around until you start to remember the park, there are many places if you go over dunes they quickly drop off and might take you for a ride. You will need a flag, you can buy them at the shops around or at the trailer right when you enter the park. They are usually 10-15 bucks each. As far as wear and tear, of coarse make sure your chain and filters are clean and lubed. My filter was fine and didnt need cleaned after riding 3 days at the dunes. Other than that have fun and always watch out and be aware of the other riders out there.

Well lets see, it will probably be kind of cool, especially at night. I dont know about the motels, we usually camp there. They do have them though. Now the worn tires will work ok but you will probably be better off getting some sand tires. Im betting you will go back, if not you can always sell the tires. You will need a flag, you can buy them there if you cant find them else where. The sand will get in everything so make sure you have a good filter. I havnt had any problems with anything out there. You have to have working tail lights and head lights to ride at night. As for safety, there are two things you have to make sure and do. First thing is, cruse around and get to know the place. You dont want to be speeding up a dune and come up to the top to find out that it dosnt flatten out, meaning that you are flying 30 feet in the air from the bottom of the dune. (Razor Backs). Second watch out for dune buggies and other quads. Those ar the two things that will hurt you really bad. Oh and have lots of fun, it is a bad *** place to go. I hope this helps

A few freinds and I are headed there sometime this spring as well. We will be making a long weekend out of it. It will be the first sand riding for all of us. I wont be buying sand tires but my freinds will. My wife will be bringing her Grizz with half bald tires so hopefully she will be able to get around with 4x4. Hondabuster where in Minisota are you at? We are in the Sheldon,Ia area just south of Worthington, MN.

It will be a long haul from Minneapolis, But if your just going out there to see what its like you shouldnt have to put tires on. They are great dunes to ride at and it will be your first step to being a Dune addict. It will be one of the greatest 2 days of your life.

With an exception of the summer time(really hot) the camp grounds and hotels fill up fast on the weekends. Wednesday or Thursdays are the best days to arrive in the spring and fall. Bring lots of gas cans, there is a gas station on site but gas is alot cheeper in outer lying areas. I recomend camping, cause their is nothing better than night riding. We rode til 4:00am last time and only stopped cause it started raining. Though you say your not looking for big air you will soon change your mind when you get there and get a little taste of your abilities to fly. If it does rain the sand dries out pretty fast so not a real big deal(5" in one night and dry by late morning). Remeber that you are riding full throttle 90% of the time so if over heating is at all a problem get it dialed in ahead of time. 4x4 are great out there and always remember to were a helmet, everytime I've been there they've carried at least two people out in a meat wagon. ALL MY WET DREAMS TAKE PLACE AT THE DUNES.

Rather then purchase new tires just for the trip you can wait and if you decide while there that you really need sand tires they have a great couple of shops with fast service to get you going. We went there last weekend for our first time with a Rhino 660 and Prairie 650. So custom tires and they went everywhere we asked them to. Oh and by the way I had more fun then I've had in many year. Way for fun then this 49 year old is used to.

Just go and have a good time. Don't worry about the tires. You'll get around okay if you just take your time. You might want to check out renting a house instead of a motel there. I rent one from the Bliss family for about 70 bucks a night. Clean, sleeps 6 or more. Also, there is a great Mex restaurant in town. Just ask the folks at the convenience store in the middle of town. We have a couple of pictures of the dunes on our website. Take a look. yetiware.com

By the way...if you look at the current issue, Feb 06, issue of Dirt Wheels, page 44, top right corner, you'll see how I get around the dunes! The same picture is on our website.

Enjoy yourself at Waynoka!

I took my Grizzly last year and had a blast...it was my first time out too! I got around very well. Never buried up. Our group, Rebel Outlaws, rented a house too. $100 a night...can't beat that.

400 Cat...I'm on page 46 of the February "Dirt Wheels"...middle of page...I'm doing sand doughnuts at Sahara...
