unmarked WV trails near hatfield
#1
Has anyone ventured off of the hatfield & wagon wheel trails to the "unmarked" trails in WV? I have spoken with locals and even had some approach me at gas stations & in the stores regarding the trails that aren't part of hatfield yet because they are not "charted."
I was wondering if anyone had ridden these trails-- and if I could get some feedback on trail condition, difficulty, GPS coordinates, etc?
if not, could I get opinions on the validity of these trails?

Do not have any GPS coordinates. But I have ridden all of the trails. Including the hatfield trails. The unmarked trails are in fine shape. But dont let them catch you leaving and coming off the HMT trails, for you are supposed to stay on there trails, or they will write you a ticket. I would be glad to help ya out. Let me know what you want to know. Next time I am down there I will take my GPS and mark some places for ya. It don't cost a thing and it is not illegal.

I have ridden the Hatfield areas for 20 years, before they were Hatfield trails. I have since ridden all the trails in Lincoln and Logan. I have to say that there are trails around this area that are much more fun to ride. I live in this area and may not ride on Hatfield again due to these 'better places'. I will list 3 trails that are within the area that I believe to be better.
1) IVY- this is off the Julian Exit towards Logan. There is easily 5 hours good riding here, lots of fast trails, hillclimbs, mud pits, just about everything you could want.. for those of you that know.. the old strip mine is a blast!
2)Campbells Creek- This is by far the best area to ride in my opinion. I have rode everything from ATVs to CRF450s here for 5 years running and I have not even come close to touching all of the trails. There is everything you could ever want in this area, creeks, creekbeds, fast trails, hillclimbs, mud bogs, deep forest, strip mines....it is overwhelming!
3) CrossLanes/Nitro Ridgelines- This is very complicated and technical stuff.. not for the weak. You can put in at Golden Corral to hit the Nitro Ridgelines, and also put in on Old Goff Mtn. to hit the CrossLanes Ridgelines.
My riding buddies have all gotten married or work too much.. so I havent ridden any in a year.. I am looking to buy another ATV to get back into it.. If you are looking for another riding buddy.. I live in Nitro and have a farm in Lincoln County.. drop me a line.

Directions for trails in the H/M vicinity:
1)IVY- Take Corridor G (US-119) towards Logan. Roughly 18 miles on US-119 you will come to the Julian Exit. Take this exit and cross the railroad tracks.. you will pass a country store on the right. Approximately 3 miles after the exit you will see an unmarked paved road on the right hand side of the road.. this paved road seems like hell, with lots of potholes.. but at the end you will see an area where people park.. there are roads everywhere.. just take any of them.. it is basically a big loop. If you are just curious stop at the country store I mentioned above and ask about IVY.. or just wait for a redneck to come in.. it is well known in this area as a good place to ride.
2)Campbells Creek- IMHO this is bigger than all the Hatfields combined and 10X as fun. I64E to Exit 96 Belle drive 1 mile and turn left onto Campbells Creek Dr.. follow this road until it ends.. approximately 9 miles or so. There are several gas stations on this road if you want to stop and fuel up or get suds and food.. or just ask about the riding. This area is about 20 miles from Charleston.. DEFINATELY worth it if you want to see Gods Country. I have ridden this area probably 100 times on KTMs, CRF450s and a Rincon.. it is unfathomable how deep it is and where you can go. I doubt that I have even come close to seeing half of it.
3)Nitro Ridgelines- I64W from charleston.. approximately 15 miles to the Cross Lanes Exit. Take this exit and go left to Goff Mtn. Road. You will see a Cracker Barrel and a Golden Corral. You can offload at the Golden Corral or drive on up to the motel you will see.. you will see a trail system that goes off in the distance.. Iwill warn you that this trail system is for very experienced riders.. this is the kind of stuff you see KTM guys riding.. you know the type.. there are some complicated climbs and serious mud bogs along with some tight stuff.. but you will have the time of your life if you are experienced.
I will add 2 more for the US119 guys.. Little Hewitt and Upper Hewitt.. you will see these exits on your way to Logan not far from the Little Coal Exit. Both of these roads are marked well. These are the trails that surround the Little Coal Riding area. When you venture off of Little Coal far enough you will eventually find Little Hewitt or Upper Hewitt... So if you want extra riding.. just drive to the end of these roads and offload and ride.
For those of you that venture to IVY.. I will help you on a little secret.. the strip mines. To get to the strip mines.. after offloading.. go straight on the largest trail, cross several small creeks.. keep going towards the rail road tressels. You will dead end here and see the railroad tracks.. Look to your right.. you will see a wicked little mud track with mud bogs and a small creek. Without hitting the bogs you cross the creek, there will be a clear trail that leads you. You will see another trail directly across the creek.. that runs parallel to the train tracks and US119. Follow this trail until you see some old burned out cars.. keep going.. you will come to the strip mines.. you are sitting and looking at an unbelievable vista.. it looks like a meteor hit the earth, where they dug out this strip mine.. there are roads everywhere, with racing tracks, hill climbs, jumps, whoops... you name it.. it looks wild!! Remember that IVY is pretty big, so dont waste all day here..
Have fun.

Thanks for the great directions. I think I'm going to try the Cambells Creek trails as soon as I can.

I dont know what kind of riding you do, or like.. but I wish you luck at Cambells Creek. After you pass the last house, drive another 1/2 mile to a wide spot that will have a road going to the right and a road straight ahead. If you take the road to the right, it does not connect back to the road straight ahead.. so prepare for that. For your first adventure take the road on your ATV straight ahead and fjord the creek.. you can stay straight on that road for about 15 miles..or take the first left branch you come to. If you take the first left it is a very nice ride that has alot of hard clay and decent mud.
If you stay straight you will go through some patches in the road with sharp rocks (lots of them).. so if you have factory tires be careful!. I cant stress enough that this area is BIG.. and I have been lost countless times. I never had GPS though. On weekends this area has alot of riders, so feel safe that you are not alone. Post your experience when you get back.. I am curious as to how u like it. Be Safe!!
