Well I guess State trails in NEW York is just about a dead idea.

I have a country place in upstate new york and in the paper this weekend there was an article where the registration fee had gone up last year so the state can implement trails.
then the next line it says that the state reduced registration fee back to 10 bucks.

Well 10 bucks a year is not too much. I guess this is a way for the state to say no atv trails for you.

It is kind of sad to see that, Considering I am from Quebec and we pay almost 70 bucks a year.
but we also have the most trails in north America if I am not mistaking.

yeah, pretty much a dead idea here. there is state land here that we have ridden to the gate but are hesitant to enter. i looked at their sign in sheet for guests(hikers and such) and with in 3 years the sign up sheet was signed 3 times. so 1000's of acres of trails is closed to so 3 people can hike. makes sense right?

I am telling you it is nuts..
I hate the fact that the farmers allow ski doo's durng the winter but can't allow ATVs to use 4 feet around the outside of the trails.

What part of new york are you from?

I'm from Plattsburg area.
but live in Montreal.

i live near the tri-state area, where NY, PA, & NJ meet. there is no where to ride here. of course there are the trails i've been riding since i was a kid but its only about 15 miles round trip and even these are being closed. i usually go to PA to ride, Paragon Adventure park or Tower City Trails. these places are about 2 hrs. from as well. but there is 100,000's of acres of state land that can not be accessed.

The future of ATVing / Dirt Biking and off roading in general in NY is going to be on private land. Could be pay-to-play off road parks or land owners granting permission to a few riders.

I read somewhere, and I wish I saved the article, that NY is the third largest consumer of ATV's in the US, and at the bottom of the list for miles of public trails (or whatever the rating is).

What is this state thinking? I'd love to know how much New York ATV riders spend in PA each year. Not just on park fees either. Food, parts, camping, hotels, etc. Granted, if riding was local there may not be as much overnight stuff, but I'm sure some people would spend a weekend at a local park.

Anyway, I think the major problem is how to get started. If the state decides to open land, they will most likely open a little at a time. So the first 500 acres to open up will get overused (cuz everyone within 200 miles will flock there). Then all the tree huggers step up and point out how terrible we are for destroying the land.

Come on NY! Put together a comprehensive plan to open public land to a large segment of residents who have been asking very nicely for many years. Please.

OK, that's my rant for the day. Bottom line, we must keep the pressure on if there is any hope for off roading in our state.

Thanks for listening,
Doug

I live in tug hill New York and we just got our trails reopen again with more on the way , thanks to a lot of people fighting to keep the trail system alive , before it was mostly fire roads but we now have a nice trail system to ride on , most of it is spread as far as trails are concerned but I dont mind riding the roads at all to get to the tight trails , we now have close to 500 miles of legal riding including all the roads and trails mixed , I have also become 1 of the guides for the tug hill tour's , as it is easy to get lost in 11,000 acres.
