You will need to check your local rules and regulations, but as long as you are on your own property you should not have a problem. Keep the more quiet stock exhaust system, most complaints come from loud exhaust!!
I am in Ohio and live out in the country, our back acreage connects with the neighbors back acreage to create a larger riding area. Because we are out far enough, we also ride on the country roads, not necessarily legal but we do behave ourselves so the law looks the other way. I have saw a few people get busted but then again they were doing stupid things. I frequently take my grandkids for a ride down the road at a safe speed and have the police just wave as they pass me by. Not sure about your state, but just start asking around and let them know right away that you are not a knucklehead that wants to tear up the neighborhood.

Noise is usually the biggest reason people oppose atvs or any off road vehicles. Loud exhausts and riding late at night are definitely things you don't want to do. Littering as well, that's another thing that will make for angry neighbors.

You have definitely hit on the key reasons people don't like atv's! In my area we respect each others property and keep noise levels down, no riding late at night and we have no issues. On occasion we get someone new riding thru the area with loud exhaust or at very high speed.....it doesn't take long for the neighbors to get together and put an end to that. we consider it a privilege to be able to ride around the area without a problem and would like to protect that privilege from others who want to do whatever they feel like.
