The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System (W. VA)
in West Virginia, Trail Status is at the Official Hatfield-McCoy website at http://www.trailsheaven.com
These two links should net you some additional information about the trail:
Introducing the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System - https://atvconnection.com/editor/fea...mccoy/ride.htm
Michael Jarrell's Unofficial Hatfield-McCoy Trail Page - http://members.xoom.com/jarrellm/hat...coy/index.html
Trail Head - Logan, West Virginia: On the side of a mountain that hugs the town. Arriving on South 119 into town, turn left into town at the stop light after you cross the Guyandotte river bridge in front of the Logan General Hospital. Go straight at the next stop light and bear left with the road into the mountains and the road turns into a dirt road at the top. A small arrow on a lone tree marks the trail head somewhere in there on a lone tree. Pay attention, you might pass it. There are two trailheads in Logan County near the towns of Logan and Man and one in Mingo County near Williamson. Each of these sections begins at trailhead centers which are being established. Annual and 3-day user-permits can be purchased on the Hatfield-McCoy website http://www.hmtrails.com , or by calling the office at 800-592-2217. Permits will also be sold at the trailhead centers from 8-10 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Trail Riders like yourself all over the country are asking the same questions:
· Can we ride the trails?
Yes, we opened on Monday, October 9! The Dedication Ceremony was held on Saturday, October 14 at 1 p.m. at our authority office in Lyburn. We look forward to seeing you on Trails Heaven!

· How can we purchase permits?
You can purchase your permit on our website, call our office at 1-800-592-2217 or at one of the trailheads on Friday, Saturday or Sunday between 8 a.m. - 10 a.m.

The Boone County Community & Economic Development Corp. located in the Boone County Human Services, building 2 on Lick Creek Road in Danville is selling permits. Their phone number is 304-369-9118.

In the near future, local businesses will sell user permits.

· How much do permits cost?
In-state annual permit costs $25.
Out--of-state annual permit costs $50.
The annual permits expire on December 31, 2001.
Three-day permit costs $25.
Prices are subject to change without notice

West Virginians are paying less than riders from out-of-state because taxpayer money has helped fund the development of the trail system.

· When are the trails open?
The trails are open everyday from sunrise to sunset. We are currently open through the winter.

· Where are the trails?
We opened three trail sections. Two sections are located in Logan County near the towns of Logan and Man and one section opened in Mingo County near Williamson. When you purchase a user permit, you receive a project map with directions to the trailhead, a list of accommodation and trail rules.

· Can I have a trail map?
You can download trail maps from this site or get a map at the trailhead center.
Printable trail head maps

· Can we ride into town get gas and something to eat?
The town of Matewan (near Buffalo Mountain) allows motorized trail users to ride into town on the street. Please ride responsibly and obey all road rules. The law in West Virginia does not prohibit or allow atvs or dirt bikes on the roads. At this point, Matewan is the only town that is "officially" allowing riders into town.

· Will you have another event?
We are encouraging local civic organizations and promoters to use the trails for events. Check the events calendar for what's happening in the area.

· What vehicles can we ride?
You can ride machines under 50" wide. We plan to include 4WD vehicles at some point. No date has been established. Mules, rangers, go-carts, dune buggies and rail buggies are not allowed at this point.

· Can we get a refund or change the dates on a three day pass?
We are not refunding money or changing the dates for a three day permit purchased.

· Where is the authority office in Lyburn?
From Rt. 119, take Rt. 73 east to Rt. 10 south. Follow Rt. 10 through Logan, pass the Midway Plaza and within 1/4 mile make a right onto Ritch Creek Road (it is a blue steel bridge). The office sits directly in front. The office is about 20 minutes from Rt.119.

· What are the rules?
TRAIL RULES
Obey all user rules (see the handbook)
Obey all signs, gates, and barriers.

Marienville ATV/Bike Trail
The Marienville ATV/Bike Trail is a system of 37 miles of interconnecting trails traversing scenic, forested hills of the Marienville District of the Allegheny National Forest. The trails are designed for the enjoyment of ATV and motorbike riders of all skill levels. The trail is open from the Friday before Memorial Day to September 24; and December 20 to April 1 ("ATV Trail Area" only). Inclement wet weather may cause the trails to close in short notice--when in doubt, please call ahead.

Finding the Trail: Main trailhead parking is located along State Route 66, about fifteen miles southwest of Kane and 11 miles northeast of Marienville (maintained for winter use). Secondary trailheads are noted on the map. You can also access the trail anywhere it crosses a public road. A trail map is available on-line.

Riding the Trail: The trail is a system of loops that enable the trail user to design their ride with their skills and needs in mind. All trails are marked with yellow, diamond-shaped blazes.

Key junctions on the trail are marked by numbered wooden signposts corresponding to the junction marker numbers shown on the map. "YOU ARE HERE" maps are also located at these key junctions to aid riders in navigating the trail.

The trail has been generally divided into a Bike Trail Area and an ATV Trail Area, as shown on the map. This is done to help users find the type of riding experience most suitable for them, depending on the type of machine being ridden and the skill level of the rider. However, there is no restriction against ATVs riding on the Bike Trail Area, nor are motorbikes prohibited from the ATV Trail Area.

Bike Trail Area: In general, bikers are going to enjoy the Bike Trail Area more because of its narrow, winding, serpentine design. Its treadway is narrower and it contains more hill climbs, switchbacks, and mudholes. The Bike Trail Area is rated "most difficult," and requires a high level of skill. Trails are designated one-way travel only except where otherwise posted. This trail is open only during the summer.

ATV Trail Area: ATV riders will tend to prefer the ATV Trail Area because of its more scenic quality and wider travelways. This portion of the trail uses many old roads and railroad grades. Riding surfaces are generally wider (averaging 10 feet in width) and more level. Trails are designated one-way travel only except where otherwise noted. The trails are rated as "easier". This trail area is open during both summer and winter.

In case of emergency, the nearest hospital is located 15 miles north of the trailhead, in Kane, PA. The nearest pay telephone is located in Russell City, PA, four miles northeast of the trailhead.

Safety: If you note unsafe conditions on the trail, please report them to the Marienville Ranger Station. Things to report could include damage to the trail surface, trees across the trail, damaged or missing trail signs and blazes, dangerous stream crossings, damaged bridges, boggy areas, washouts, and other similar items. We appreciate your help.

Regulations

Volunteers: If you, a friend, or your club are interested in volunteering to help maintain this trail, please inquire at the Marienville Ranger District office.

This project was financed in part by a grant from the National Recreation Trails Fund under the administration of the Federal Highway Administration and the Department of Conservation of Natural Resources (DCNR).

The trail utilizes many old roads and railroad grades. Riding surfaces are generally level and wide (averaging 8 feet in width). Two-way travel is permitted on the trail.

During the winter season, this trail provides snowmobile access from the south and southeast to the Allegheny Snowmobile Loop system. Because of concurrent use of ATVs and snowmobiles, this trail is not groomed.

In case of emergency: Hospitals are located in Kane, PA, via SR 66 10 miles north of the trailhead and 14 miles southeast of the trailhead in Ridgway, PA. The nearest pay telephone is located in Highland, PA, one mile south of the trailhead.
