This is a BLM "open" area, southeast of the town of Ocotillo Wells. There is a large flat area and dry lake bed, where you can ride it wide open. Running roughly from the northwest to the southeast are a group of large granite hills that are mostly covered in sand. The granite hills peter out into some mud hills toward the southeast. DO NOT RIDE TO THE NORTH OF THE HILLS!! THIS IS A LIVE FIRE BOMBING RANGE!! Have a serious talk with your kids about picking up any funny looking things. There could be unexploded ordinance in the area!!

There is a powerline which runs along the south side of the mountains. It makes a nice landmark when riding cross country. The area at the base of the hills is sandy, and fun for kids and beginners. The mud hills provide some fun semi-technical trail riding. The granite hills have lots of steep dunes, interspersed with patches of granite rocks.

How to get there: Take county highway S30 (Forrester Rd) North from I-8, or South from Westmorland (called Center St in town, but turns into Forrester ourside town). Turn West onto Imler Rd. After a few miles, Imler turns South and becomes Huff Rd. (although there are no signs identifying it as Huff). Turn West onto Wheeler (dirt) Rd. Wheeler will run you past the dry lake, and right up to the base of the hills.

Rider review: This is a place you might want to visit once or twice a season. If you went there exclusively though, it might eventually get old. It is much less crowded than Ocotillo Wells SVRA, and WAY less crouded than Glamis, even on holiday weekends. Throw in your paddle tires for fun in the dunes, but be carefull not to hack them up on the rocks.

Thanks for the review YZGuy. I'll have to check the place out.
