Lake Michigan Ferry?
#1
Hey guys~
I plan to go to Silver Lake sometime this summer but am not sure of the fastest/easiest way to get there. I could drive down to Chicago and around Lake Michigan. I could take the scenic route through the UP of Michigan. Or I could take the ferry across Lake Michigan that leaves from Manitowoc I think. Which do you think would be the easiest? Oh yeah, I drive a Jeep Wrangler so it's going to be a LONG trip no matter which way I take!

Here's a good piece of advice, AVOID chicago! Atleast during the week day. I commute to work everyday from the southside and they are working on I-57 and that causes the Dan Ryan (I-94) to crawl! Good thing I'm going to NY to work on the American Express building there at the WTC for a month, hopefully the road construction will be done by the time I get back. If you pass through later in the day between 6:30pm and 5:30am the traffic usually is not that bad.
If I was you I would seriously consider the ferry. From what I understand it's a 4 hour ride. It seems to be alot of money though. They charge per person, vehicle and trailor (per foot wide!). But it does land 20min north of SilverLake.
Hope that helps.

Thanks 2fiftyx. I really didn't think it would be that much to ride the ferry! It would cost me roughly 150 bucks for the round trip!! That would be a lot of gas for my jeep! I'll probably end up making a last minute decision on which way to take. Thanks again for the info.

If you go south through Chicago; take the Skyway. About $3.00 in tolls with little traffic and a nice break from the madhouse you just passed through.
One of the fastest big towns to go through if your timing's right. On the other hand, if you don't think about when folks come and go from the 'burbs or somebody wrecks; like 2fiftyx says, a several hour experience.
