Socal peeps.....Sands Ca?
#1
A customer of mine told me that he goes riding in some dunes called "sands". It's an old RR town south of baker,Ca. I cant seem to get much info on this place,(the Barstow blm was NO help) But I'm wondering if it's the southern side of the Rasor area.
If you go to Topozone and look up the map called "Cowhole mountain" you will see "sands" along the RR tracks.
It looks to be pretty close to the kelso dunes which are closed to atv's. I don't want to waste a trip if the place is closed.
Does anybody have a BLM map of Rasor? Is this place on that map?
Any clues? Thx

On the BLM map (in the "Sands" area), the north side of the RR track is national park, and the south side is wilderness. A couple miles west of "Sands" (the area west of where the power lines cross the RR tracks), there is regular BLM land on the south side (but also a few square miles of ACEC which is probably closed???), and national park on the north side of the RR tracks. Maybe this is what he is refering to??? Doesn't look like the area has any easy access. Easiest way to explore might be to just ride up the RR tracks (along the south side) from Rasor, and see what you can find??? I have friends who rode this area extensively before it all got closed. I will ask them what they know.
I will be out there the weekend of 3/28-30. If I have time, I might take a look for you. It looks like from where the old Tonopah and Tidewater RR grade crosses the Union Pacific tracks at Rasor, it would be about a 10 mile ride to where the powerlines cross, and the wilderness begins. I would think if you drove in on Zzyzx Rd or some other road in the national park, with a trailer full of quads, you might attract a lot of unwanted attention!!!

Ooops! I posted this question before I read your response to my Pm...My bad!
Anyway. I'm gonna try to get up to the BLM office in Barstow and get a BLM map of Rasor. I figure that if it's not on the rasor map then it's not a legal place to ride.
I think the fellow whom told me about it either isn't aware that it's closed or hasn't realized it.
Looks kinda like a back way into the Kelso dunes to me.
If it's closed then I don't want to bother with going there (1) I hate getting hassled by the fuzz (2) Makes us all look bad and gives the tree huggers more ammo to use against us.
