I'm currently in the market for a new ride and have been thoroughly investigating both the griz and the sportsman. as for the fuel boil, its obviously out there, because people talk about it. However, none of my friends that ride the griz have ever experienced it. Riding in Georgia and Tennessee heat would have surely made that happen. I've heard you can fix/prevent this with heat tape on the bottom of the fuel tank and wrap the fuel lines. From a pic of the '04's, looks like they've vented the engine housing to alleviate the heat. Maybe they've insluated the lines as well.
As for the Sportsman, if you inspect the machine, you will see that they come from the factory with insulation on both the tank and the lines. Perhaps addressing the same problem????
The true test is in the trails. After three weekends in the woods: Griz-3 Sportsman-0. No bias, just the facts. First weekend, Sportsman 700 broke an axle while the griz was the only one to make it up one section and had to winch the rest. Second weekend, numerous sportsman issues held up the day, stopping at least three times for repairs. Third weekend, hill climbing proved too much for the sluggish tranny on the Sportsman 600 & 700.
I would definitely prefer to buy American, or at least Canadian. The Polaris, from looks alone, with the braided lines, stock Goodyear tires, sturdy rack setup, etc. is a very nice machine. But I plan to ride it more than look at it. I'll have that SWEET new blue griz in my garage before too much longer!!!!!
