My Engine Blew :-(
#1
Yup, last weekend it blew up and I just found out what went wrong and it's not good. I was drag racing on the flats and just finished revving out 4th gear was when I shifted into 5th right when I let the clutch out and gave it some gas it just died and just made one loud pop, luckily I did it at low RPM's so it could of been worse. Heres what happened, the rod snapped at the top and left the piston at TDC completly demolishing it and broke 2 possibly 3 valves and when the rod snapped it busted a nice hole in the bottom of the cases. A peace of the rod is missing and I think it got lodged into the tranny which explains why it locks up in the gears. Gonna cost alot to fix but I'll have 'er runnin in a few weeks. I'm gonna replace all the stock parts with heavy duty ones to make sure it lasts longer with the HP it's putting out. I'm sooooo lucky the piston didn't jam itself into the head! At first I didn't think I was gonna have the money to fix it and I thought I was gonna have to sell it but I figured something out! I'm a little bit pissed/upset but I knew when I built my engine that I was taking a risk and my bad luck kicked in

That sucks.
My buddy toasted his motor so while he was rebuilding it he bought a used 400ex cheap so he could still go riding. When he finished his motor, he sold the 400ex for more than what he paid for it.

No clue how it went, I assume the very high compression teamed with the massive torque it's putting out over stock and the fact that the stock rod is kinda weak and prone to it. It was built by Craycraft and it didn't blow because of their build, it blew because of parts being stock that shouln't of been because it was my choice to leave them that way.

Sorry to hear the bad news BigBubba, this misfurtune scares me big time lots of rod failures lately, I heard it had to do with stock bore but that's not your case and I just ordered a 12.1 JE 102mm piston and stage 2cam w/springs like you were running and will be tearing the motor down next week, now Im thinking if I need to upgrade the stock rod to prevent something like this from happenning to me and how much more work is it to replace the rod while Im already in the motor?

another built '01 raptor with '02 tranny mod with a broken rod... was it a carillo?? Im sure bob put one in. That really sucks to hear. Looks like it may be back to the R&D for craycraft, or maybe just faulty parts...
Airraptor - This IMO is another case of what I said before about the '01 cases not being align bored properly.

Ok how many people running hi-comp with no problems. Are we looking at a big number of failures or a few...but counting..isolated ones. If mine blows the bike will have to go. I have checked out every possible tolerance on mine, so I hope it don't blow.
