From what I hear, there is no avoiding it. It will happen. I also hear them say using reverse less makes it last longer?

You can tell you have the problem when it locks up or has a second neutral where second used to be. Thanks Yamaha.

The same shift fork for reverse actuates second gear, the throw from 2nd to reverse for this shiftfork is no longer than any other shift but the fact that the gear is spinning the opposite way on the drive axle gives it some synchronization issues. Reverse doesnt like to engage without a clunk, a couple clicks or whatnot which I feel stresses the shift fork and weakens it over time. So when it swings back over to engage second it may not engage fully, half-assed and breaks the dogs on the gear.

If you use reverse on an 01 be very deliberate and as smooth as possible
